The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
In all His wisdom and insight, God did what He had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan He had already decided to complete by means of Christ. This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.
Ephesians 1:8b-10 GNT
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Think about what we know about God. While the scriptures reveal a lot about Him to us, there is infinitely more that we don’t know and will never know until that day when we are with Him forever.
This is why it is such a special treat when the Maker and Master of all creation gives us insights into what He has in store for His people and in the next two messages from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, we will see two mysteries unveiled. We look at the first on in the second half of verse 8 in chapter one through verse 10. Look again at these words here:
In all His wisdom and insight, God did what He had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan He had already decided to complete by means of Christ. This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.
As we read these words, we find several takeaways that God gives us.
First, He uses His almighty wisdom and insight in everything He does.
In this case, this wisdom and insight was used to plan purposes that God would have for His people and this leads to the second takeaway.
God always works with a purpose in mind. He isn’t operating haphazardly but rather in a very calculated way, in the way that He deems best to move. In this case, it was God’s will to make known to His people a secret plan, a mystery that He had decided to complete. Note that God wasn’t concealing what He planned on doing. Rather, He made it known right up front.
As we see in our passage, God tells us what He had purposed to happen. He reveals His great mystery, informing that it would be accomplished through Jesus, His Son.
What plan was God exposing to His people?
That He intended to bring all creation, “everything in heaven and on earth”, together. It’s a scene of perfect unity where every single member of creation is under the authority of Christ who would be the head. And the scriptures definitely reveal more about this mystery because we know Jesus will return and when He does, He will judge all creation having been given authority over everything in heaven and on earth by His Father God (Matthew 28:18).
In these two and a half verses, we find an amazing mystery revealed by God. He purposely let His people know that He will send His Son Jesus to unify all creation under His leadership. There’s only one thing that God holds back disclosing.
He doesn’t tell us when Jesus will come.
All He says is that it will be “when the time is right” and this simply means it will happen in God’s appointed time in accordance with His perfect will.
In the end translation, no one can say that they didn’t know Jesus would return when He does come. This isn’t concealed from anyone because God saw it fitting to reveal one of His many mysteries.
We’ll look at a second in tomorrow’s message.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
