The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”
Matthew 28:16-18
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
I have had the privilege to live for more than sixty years now and I can honestly say I haven’t seen the level of leadership conflicts at the national, state, and local government levels like they are right now. The public looks at these spectacles, that play out like real life reality television or soap operas in many instances, and has to wonder to themselves, “Who’s really in charge?”
You see, rather than lead us forward to better days and better ways, too often we find our political leaders mired in the mud that they love to sling at one another and while they are going through their tit for tat attacks on one another, nothing positive gets done for the constituency they were elected to serve. It’s enough to rile up even the most level headed person and indeed, we see this happening today.
So when will we as a people wake up? When will we stop looking at our worldly elected officials for guidance, direction, and representation and shift our focus to the heavens where we can see the One who is truly in charge, the One who God has placed in authority over all created things.
Of course, I am speaking about the very Son of God Himself, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
As we find the Gospel of Matthew coming to a close, we see Jesus offering some final information to His disciples, the Eleven (Twelve minus the deceased Judas) who had traveled to a mountain in Galilee where Jesus commanded them to meet up with Him. There we find the resurrected Savior make a proclamation that has spanned the breadth of history since then and will remain so until He (Jesus) returns again to judge the earth and everyone within it.
What was that proclamation?
Look again at His words here:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”
Note here the absolute sovereignty given to Jesus by His Father God. For He wasn’t placed in authority over just some of what is in heaven and on earth. Rather, ALL things in heaven and on earth were placed in His authority. ALL things and ALL means ALL.
Yes, we elect leaders to local, state, and federal offices, entrusting our governance to them but they aren’t really in charge. Rather, they answer to the same Jesus as everyone and everything else does. None of them are in a position greater than Him, no matter how much they think and act like they are. The truth is the truth and Jesus spoke total, perfect truth because He and He alone IS the truth. He told us so Himself. And so when Jesus says that God has placed Him in authority over all things then He is in authority over everything. Period. This is not debatable.
The prophet Isaiah knew Jesus would be elevated to this lofty status well before He was even born. In the ninth chapter of the Old Testament book that bears the prophet’s name, he foresees this about God’s only Son, the One who would be placed in charge over all things:
“For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end” (Vv. 6-7).
In A.D. 33, Jesus was raised from the dead with God’s resurrection power to be placed in power over all creation. From that time on until now and from here through forever, the real governance of the heavens and earth has been in the hands of Jesus. Next time, you start to get dismayed because it seems no one is really in charge here on earth, remember that it doesn’t really matter because Jesus told us He is truly in charge and we couldn’t follow a more perfect leader than Him.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
