The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Matthew 28:19-20
He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
Mark 16:15-18
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
What is my purpose in life?
I think it’s a question that everyone comes around to eventually.
It’s a question born out of wanting our lives to count, for them to have value. No one wants to feel like they are just wasting time and going through the motions, stringing one worthless day together with another.
Because of this, we find the scriptures, and in this case, the very words of Jesus Himself, providing us with the answer to the question, “What is my purpose in life?” Look again at these words from Matthew 28, verses 19 and 20, a passage that has best known as The Great Commission:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20
Here we find Jesus giving us orders as to how we are to live every day and note I said orders because His commands as stated are not optional. Jesus doesn’t say, “I suggest that you go and make disciples of all nations” or “I recommend that you baptize people in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” He doesn’t just hint that it would be a good idea to teach people to obey everything that He commanded.
No, He demands that we go and make and baptize and teach. He gives us action words and then expects us to do what He says and take action. We all work or have worked and when your boss tells you to do something, you had better do it or you won’t have your job for very long. In yesterday’s devotion, we read Jesus tell His disciples (and us) that He had been placed in complete authority over everything in heaven and on earth with an emphasis on everything. He is in charge and we are subordinate to Him in every way so when He says to do something, we have no choice but to do it. There is no debate here.
When you work for your Lord Jesus, and all Christians are His workers in the harvest fields for the cause of salvation, you are always full time employed with lots of overtime. There is no time to feel like you have no purpose because in Jesus, you are always purposed, 24/7, 365 days a year. It’s hard work, no question about that, but this work, the work Jesus calls us to carry out, brings with it the best retirement plan ever. For when our work on earth is done, we enter into an eternal day off and spend it in a mansion prepared especially for us by our Lord.
Friends, rejoice and be glad because in Jesus Christ, we are never without purpose. Through His Great Commission, He has given us a lifelong mission with the most rewarding results when we do it right, partnering with Him through the Holy Spirit. For what could be better than helping others who were once lost and hopeless, walking down the road of damnation and doom, to become saved and find a reversal of fortune, trading in torment for glory, everlasting darkness for never ending light, sorrow for joy, and despair for hope.
Today and every day, I pray you’ll stop and give thanks for the amazingly gratifying and satisfying purpose you have in Christ Jesus, your Master and Savior.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
