The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”
James 3:17-18
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
As the third chapter of James’ epistle ends, we find God’s word discussing the matter of wisdom, making it crystal clear there are only two types, defined by their markedly different sources.
Yesterday, we looked the first type of wisdom, the one that is not of the Lord, the one that God’s word tells us is unspiritual and demonic because the wisdom comes from none other than Satan himself. We learned that a person embracing this devil-providing wisdom could be identified by their behavior which would be grounded in envy and selfish ambition. The scriptures tell us such behavior breeds disorder and every evil practice. Obviously this is a sin-based wisdom and as we look at our world today, there is no shortage of people subscribing to it.
Fortunately, there is a better alternative, one we find spelled out in the last two verses of this chapter. For the Lord provides His people wisdom from heaven and this wisdom is marked by its purity and sincerity, the peace it promotes, an endorsement of impartiality and consideration of others, an encouragement of submissiveness, and a push toward mercy and good fruit, a drive toward the fruits of the Spirit.
Where demonic wisdom leads people to discord, heavenly wisdom endorses peacemaking and remember what Jesus said about peacemakers:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
It’s very obvious here that our Lord wants us to sow peace and to do it in mass quantity. Looking at the divisiveness that we see in the United States alone, it’s an expectation a majority of people are not willing to meet, especially people in positions of leadership within government, the media, and the entertainment industry.
As a result, what are we seeing?
A widespread spiritual famine which has resulted in a drought of righteousness in our land, an indicator that demonic wisdom is trending up while heavenly wisdom is in short supply.
We need a turnaround and the answer, as it has been every single time a society has gotten this way, is found in the heavens and a people willing to humbly turn to God as He requires in the scriptures:
“…if My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
