The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
James 3:14-16
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Live life long enough and you’ll understand the importance of wisdom. We talk about it all the time as if there is only one wisdom available but as we look at the Bible, we find there are actually two types and they are both defined in the third chapter of the Epistle of James. We’ll look at these two very different categories of wisdom today and tomorrow, starting with the one we all need to stay away from. God’s word tells us why in our verses for today:
“But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” James 3:14-16
Note here that wisdom has a source and it isn’t with us. In other words, a person can’t construct their own wisdom. They can think they can but in the end, wisdom either comes from one of two places: the world where the devil is having his way or heaven, the Lord’s domain where Satan has no place.
How do you know where your source is?
The scriptures tell us.
It starts by looking within your heart and keep in mind that if you’re not always inspecting it, the Lord is. Rest assured of that.
When you do examine yourself, do you find any traces of bitter envy or selfish ambition?
If so, your wisdom is unspiritual and demonic, of the earth and instigated by Satan himself. And it’s not like this is out of sight of others. Rather, this truth will play out in one’s behavior for bitter envy and selfish ambition will lead a person to create disorder and get involved. We know because God’s word tells us so and it’s obvious this kind of living is not what He expects from us.
It’s also a truth we can’t deny. You may try to justify or explain your way out of using wisdom unacceptable to the Lord. You can create as many excuses for it as you want. But the truth is the truth and God will hold anyone accountable if they willingly opt to embrace demonic wisdom.
So what kind of wisdom does the Lord endorse?
We’ll look at that in tomorrow’s message and I hope you’ll check it out then.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
