The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Matthew 24:30-31
At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And He will send His angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
Mark 13:26-27
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
Luke 21:27-28
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
It has all been leading to this.
Over the past seven days, we have looked at Jesus sharing events that would occur before He returns to earth and there weren’t just a few small things. No, these happenings were big and therefore hard to miss. In other words, Jesus wanted everyone to know He was coming and as we see in our scriptures for today, He was coming in a fashion worthy of the Son of the God Most High, the Savior of the world who was being sent by His Father to judge the earth and all inhabitants of it.
This is why this study has been so important. As Christians, we need to see the connection between future distinctive, major occurrences in order to understand why they are happening and then channel that recognition into eager anticipation for Jesus’ return. Unfortunately, there will be a large segment of the world’s population that won’t share in the excitement of Christians. Having rejected Jesus all along, they will be completely indifferent to everything going on and that indifference will cost them an eternal damnation, an existence of everlasting torment. As we look at the scriptures for today, I believe it will be those who denied Jesus who will be counted among the ones who mourn His second coming. For the rest, it will be a time to lift up heads because redemption will have come. Look again at our passages for this last devotion in the series simply titled, “The Signs”:
Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Matthew 24:30-31

Do you remember the signs that Jesus spoke of in yesterday’s devotion?
They are important to remember because they will immediately precede Jesus’ appearance. They include a darkened sun and moon, stars falling from the sky, and quaking heavens above. Indeed, something was far from normal in the heavens and as we see in today’s scriptures, we see why.
For as people fix their eyes to the skies, they will see Jesus, the Son of Man, riding to earth on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory. This will be so magnificent that I don’t think anyone can fully fix the proper image in their minds. This is because no one has ever witnessed the amazing glory that will take place on that day.
Now, just the sight of Jesus coming on the clouds would be incredible enough but He wasn’t traveling alone. For as we read in Matthew and Mark’s accounts, Jesus will sound a divine trumpet across the heavens and summon His angels to assist Him with what He had come to do.
What was that exactly?
Well, Jesus was coming to judge the earth and there would be people who would be innocent and others who would be guilty. Those were counted among the elect would be those who accepted Jesus as Savior and in turn received their justification because He had already paid the cost of their judgment on Calvary’s cross. At His return, the elect Christians would gain their redemption. Meanwhile, everyone else will gain destruction.
As we close this series today, there is only one real question of merit.
As you look at yourself right now, are you among the elect or those destined for doom?
The answer is gained by answering another question:
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is your Savior, and that He, out of His deep love for you, died the death you deserved to bring you a salvation you could never earn without Him?
If your answer is yes, then stand up and lift your head and do so day after day after day after day. Do so because your redemption is coming and although you don’t know the day and time that will happen, you definitely now know the signs that will signal it is about to occur, all thanks to the blessing of God’s word in the gospels.
Thanks be to Him for the incredible gift of His Son and the salvation He brings.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
