The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.”

Matthew 24:36-41

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

Mark 13:32

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Do you like to operate according to a schedule?

Most people do.

In fact, most people are creatures of habit at their core. We like to get up a certain time, eat and maybe enjoy a favorite beverage like coffee at certain times of the day, workout, watch our shows on television, and then turn in to rest in order to get up and follow our routine the next day.

If someone wants to do something with us or wants us to do something for them, what do we usually say?

“Let me check my schedule”, right?

It’s just another way to say, “Let me see if I can fit you into my daily routine.”

Yes, we’re all in love with our schedule, so much so that we usually want advance notice about anything that might alter it. Someone telling us something will happen without a day and time it will happen breeds a lot of angst and frustration in the schedule-centric person.

With this in mind, we find Jesus telling His disciples (and all of us as well) that an event is coming, one that we had better watch out for and be ready when it happens. There’s only one problem.

No one knows when this event will happen. No one, that is, except God the Father.

Note what Jesus is saying here. He is returning. He’s coming back to earth from heaven and He is going to judge all inhabitants of this earth. He just doesn’t know when.

It’s true.

Jesus said that no one knows outside of His Father and ours.

No one here on earth knows.

Not one angel in heaven knows.

Jesus doesn’t even know Himself and you might ask yourself, “How can that be?”

The answer is found in the matter of everyone, including Jesus, being responsible to carry out the will of God.

God doesn’t have to tell us His schedule. He’s not obligated to share the timeline for our lives, even though He promised He knows the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11). We don’t dictate anything to God. Rather, we are to be fully at His disposal and ready to change our plans to adopt His whenever He asks us to do so.

That’s how it works.

So the call Jesus gave all His followers was to simply watch and pray, ever ready for the time God chooses to send Him back to bring salvation to Christians and judgment to those who chose to reject the Savior, the Lamb of God who lived, died, and was resurrected to take away the sins of people (John 1:29) and bring them an offer of eternal life.

In the end translation, planning and scheduling is okay but we need to always remember that the Lord’s plan may not always match up with ours and we’re not always going to know when our best laid intentions might be suddenly interrupted in a divine way and for divine purposes. When that happens, we need to always defer to the will of our Father, just as our Savior Jesus did.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
