The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Matthew 6:24

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As we see in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote letters to many churches but he also wrote to specific people as well. Look at these words Paul penned to Timothy who he called “my true son in the faith”:

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:10

Now, if I hadn’t placed any identifier with these words, no reference to book or author, you may think it was written in more modern times for as we look at our world today, we certainly see that the verse is still applicable. And yet, here we find Paul writing about the dangers associated with money in the first century AD well preceding us here in the 21st century and shortly following these words of Jesus spoken during His centerpiece teaching session, a session we know as the Sermon on the Mount:

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”  Matthew 6:24

These words of our Savior try to help us stay out of the kind of trouble with money that Paul warns Timothy of by causing us to face a simple question:

“Who is your master?”

Note here that this isn’t a question that carries with it many answers. Rather, the person answering the question only has two options:

God or money.

There is no third choice, no middle ground. We have to pick who we will allow to rule us.

Will it be a worldly material item that is only of value for as long as you will live (because you can’t take it with you)?

Or will it be a God who was responsible for your very existence, the One who gave you the opportunity to live and love and learn, the One who gives you all the direction needed to live a right and righteous life, the One who desires for you to live with Him now and forever (You see, God can take you with Him into eternal life through His Son Jesus)?

Still a bit hesitant with your answer?

Go back to the words of Jesus and see what He has to say about someone who tries to be on the fence, wanting to serve two masters, God and money:

“Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”

Choosing to love money and allowing it to be your master, becoming subservient to it in the process, is akin to hating God.

That’s what you are signing up for if you commit yourself to money as your master. No wonder Paul would later write that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil”. For what could be more evil (and foolish) than choosing money over the God who blessed you with it, the God who can take it all away just as easily.

Are you counted in that number today? Is your love of money greater than your love of God?

Jesus makes it clear.

You can’t have it both ways. You have to choose between God and money.

Who is your master?

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
