The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

Matthew 6:22-23

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

The other day, I went to get my annual eye exam which I am happy to report was very positive. My eyesight has not gotten better (I still need to wear reading glasses) but it hasn’t degraded any either. The report from my eye doctor lifted my spirits as any good health report does but then I read today’s words from Jesus, verses that serve as the foundation for today’s devotion and I am reminded that our eyes play a much greater role in our health than the average person understands. Look again at His words here:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Matthew 6:22-23

The primary question here is “Do you examine what you allow your eyes to see?”

You see, what Jesus is getting at here is that we can have the best eyesight possible and yet be unhealthy because of what we allow those eyes to look at. It’s through the perspective offered by our Savior that we see how our eyes play a much larger role than just the physical, anatomical one most people focus on. There is a spiritual impact as well.

When we allow our eyes to look at things that are acceptable to God, then our eyes shine light into our inner souls, filling our whole body with spiritual health. Conversely, allow your eyes to look at sinful wicked things and nothing but darkness enters, filling your body with unhealthiness.

Can you start to see why it’s important to watch what you allow yourself to look at?

Keep that in mind the next time you read words that you know are unacceptable to the Lord. Ditto when you watch something on television, at the movies, or online. Let the Lord set the allowable limit on what is permissible and then hold the line there. It’s a sure way to ensure your body is full of light and healthy vice packed with darkness and unhealthy.

So what’s our takeaway?

The bottom line is that we all have a choice as to what we allow our eyes to see. Jesus is letting us know just how important that choice is. The rest is up to us.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
