The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed Him, and He healed all who were ill. He warned them not to tell others about Him. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“Here is My servant whom I have chosen, the One I love, in whom I delight; I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He has brought justice through to victory. In His name, the nations will put their hope.”

Matthew 12:15-21

Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. When they heard about all He was doing, many people came to Him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. Because of the crowd, He told his disciples to have a small boat ready for Him, to keep the people from crowding Him. For He had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch Him. Whenever the impure spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” But He gave them strict orders not to tell others about Him.

Mark 3:7-12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What do you think when you look at our current world picture?

Tensions over North Korea’s quest to design nuclear weapons, threatening to strike other nations once the capability is acquired.

Iran’s continued aggression toward Israel and anyone who would be its ally.

Terrorism raising its dangerous, deadly head in many nations of the world, indiscriminate in the way it seeks to take life away.

Conflicts slowly simmering between major powers who seemingly can’t agree to just get along and coexist.

It’s enough to make you feel sometimes like we’re heading down the wrong road, down a road where there is little hope for the nations.

Thank goodness we have the scriptures who can lead us from this place of pessimism to a brighter outlook of things to come. One such excerpt is found in today’s passages from the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. Look again at these words here:

Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed Him, and He healed all who were ill. He warned them not to tell others about Him. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“Here is My servant whom I have chosen, the One I love, in whom I delight; I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He has brought justice through to victory. In His name, the nations will put their hope.”  Matthew 12:15-21

Mark 3:7-12

You’ll recall that the Pharisees, angered by Jesus’ healing of a man in the synagogue on the Sabbath, had started conspiring with the Herodians on how they might kill Jesus. Jesus, knowing their intentions, withdrew “from that place” and went to a lake with a “large crowd from Galilee” following Him. They were joined by people “from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon”. Jesus went on to heal all were ill and drive out the impure spirits who “fell down” before Him while crying out that Jesus was the “Son of God”.

God’s word tells us that all Jesus did was in validation the following prophecy of Isaiah:

“Here is My servant whom I have chosen, the One I love, in whom I delight; I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He has brought justice through to victory. In His name, the nations will put their hope.” Isaiah 42:1-4

Here we find God testifying the following things about His Son:

1. Jesus was His chosen Servant.

2. He loved and delighted in Jesus.

3. He placed His Spirit on Jesus.

4. Jesus would proclaim justice to the nations.

5. Jesus would not quarrel or cry out.

6. Jesus would bring justice through to victory.

7. Nations will put their hope in Jesus’ name.

It’s that last prediction that left the people in Jesus’ day (and ours) optimistic about the future. For there is no doubt here that any nation can find hope but only if they do one very important thing:

They have to place their hope in Jesus’ name.

Indeed, there is absolutely no doubt that there is hope for the nations today because Jesus is alive and well, His name still being the Name above every other name. All any nation needs to do is place their faith and trust in Him, the Son of God who came to earth to bear the cost of sin and thus offer pardon and salvation to anyone who believes in His holy name.

Won’t you join me in prayer that this happens sooner rather than later?

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
