The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

When Jesus came into Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on Him.

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Matthew 8:14-17

As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So He went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but He would not let the demons speak because they knew who He was.

Mark 1:29-34

Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So He bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them. Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Messiah.

Luke 4:38-41

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Word was beginning to spread about Jesus across the Galilean countryside as He was teaching with an authority that the Jewish faithful had not seen in their teachers of the law. Further, that authority in teaching was accompanied by an incredible power that had changed water into wine, healed a boy from a great distance with just spoken words, and driven out a demon from a man during a Sabbath synagogue service.

But Jesus was far from done. In fact, He was just getting started. For as we see in today’s accounts from Matthew, Mark, and Luke, He was back to work healing and casting out other impure spirits after leaving the synagogue in Capernaum:

Then Jesus came into Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.

Mark 1:29-34

Luke 4:38-41

Scriptures tell us two of Jesus’ first disciples, Peter and Andrew, had a home in Capernaum and that it was there that a family member lay gravely ill. We read where the woman was Peter’s mother-in-law, interesting because there is little mention that one of Jesus’ closest and most trusted disciples was married. Nevertheless, James and John took Jesus to the home, asking Him to help the woman that He found suffering from a high fever, the same malady that had plagued the royal official’s son which was an indicator that the illness was not isolated but rather common.

In the presence of His followers, Jesus touched the woman’s hand and rebuked the fever, causing it to depart from her. To the amazement of everyone who witnessed this, Peter’s mother-in-law was helped to her feet by Jesus and immediately went to work waiting on those present. The woman had been completely healed by a touch from Jesus and restored to the service of Him and others.

Now one might think that this would have been enough for one day in regard to Jesus’ performing wonders but He wasn’t finished yet. For as evening fell on the land of Galilee, the scriptures tell us that a crowd gathered as people started bringing Jesus those who were sick and demon-possessed. These people as well as the whole town gathered to see Jesus systematically go about healing many who came with various diseases, showing He could handle anything, not just fevers. God’s word tells us Jesus once again brought healing with a touch, laying His hands on the afflicted and restoring them to full health. He also continued to display His command over demons, driving out the impure spirits with a word while denying them the chance to speak because they knew who He was, the Messiah and Son of God.
Ultimately, all that Jesus was doing was to continue fulfilling the prophesies spoken about Him by the prophets, in this instance Isaiah who had predicted:

“He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” Isaiah 53:4

Friends, this power on display within our scripture passages today is the same power available to us today. For Jesus, alive and well with us, is still able to heal our afflictions and infirmities with a mere touch of His Spirit, restoring us to His service so we might fulfill His purposes. Likewise, He is also driving out the demons that may plague us, demons used by the enemy to drive us into the dark depths of life and away from the amazing, eternal hope Jesus brings. Those destructive spirits stand no chance against the words of Jesus or even the mere mention of His name. For He has already gained the victory over our enemy and this makes anyone who places their belief in God’s Son victorious as well. Satan can never snatch away when Jesus has promised those who place their hope, faith, and trust in Him.

In what way do you need healed today?

Jesus is waiting to touch you in a special way to make it happen, according to His purposes.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
