The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy
word.
“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for
God my Savior; my God will hear me.”
Micah 7:7
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks
be to God.
In the opening verses of Micah 7, we find the prophet who
this book is named after lamenting hard over the state of the Israelite nation,
a nation that had fallen in so many ways evident by the way they failed to
follow God and sinned against Him and one another as a result. You’ll recall
that through looking at Israel, we caught a glimpse of many problems we find in
our world today over 2,000 years later.
So what could Micah do about being within the throes of
such wickedness? What can we do today, often surrounded by many of the same
lamentable circumstances?
We find the answer in a single verse, spoken by Micah
himself. Look again at these words here:
“But as for me, I
watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.” Micah 7:7
Fixing the transgressive state of the Israelites was more
than Micah could handle. A mere mortal human, he didn’t possess the power to
change the hearts of an entire nation. Maybe you can relate as you look at the
community, the state, the nation, and/or the world you live in.
But note that Micah knew he didn’t have to worry about
repairing all that was broken.
Why?
Because he knew who could right the wrongs of Israel and
bring the people back to the place they needed to be. He knew all he had to do
was trust in the Lord. His words say as such as he vows to just watch and wait,
placing his hope in the Lord who had called him to serve as a prophet, the Lord
who was his Savior, the Lord who not only gave him words to speak to others but
listened when His messenger called.
Micah knew that the Lord would intervene in the matters
of Israel and bring judgment for their sinfulness. After all, the prophet had
been told by God Himself to announce such a coming punishment. All Micah really
needed to do is watch and wait for the Lord to do what He said He would do.
The same applies for us today. So instead of losing heart
in the midst of a world where there is so much blatant sinfulness and
opposition toward God, all we need to do is watch and wait for the Lord to do
what He said He would do. For a day is coming when the entire world will be
judged and the only way anyone will be saved is if they had placed their hope,
faith, and trust In Jesus as Savior.
The people of this world are going to be held accountable
in the end. The effort needed is more than any one person can provide but it’s
not too hard for the Lord.
Just you watch, wait, and see.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
