The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
The Lord is good to…the one who seeks Him.
Lamentations 3:25b
This ends today’s
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Yesterday we entered into a four part series on good things
we can do when it comes to our relationship with the Lord. Part one examined
how it is good to place our hope in the Lord because in Him we find all we
could ever ask for and all we could ever need.
Today, we look at part two and how it is good to seek the
Lord. Look at today’s scripture again here:
The Lord is
good to…the one who seeks Him. Lamentations
3:25b
If the Lord is good to those who seek Him, then it only makes
sense that we should always seek Him when it comes to everything we deal with
in life.
It makes sense but we don’t always do it, right?
We don’t.
Why?
Because there’s this little problem we have with chasing
after our own desires in life, a problem that often has us turning away from
the Lord to seek fulfillment in other places.
It’s true. In one breath, people pray as Jesus told them saying,
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done” but deep inside they are hoping more that
their own will be done instead. They want to go after any number of enticing
offerings they find at the world’s buffet table of temptations like money or
success or material gain or sexual satisfaction, placing the value of their
happiness in those things. And the stronger the longing is for any object a
person wants, the stronger the possibility that they will be willing to do
whatever it takes to be satisfied.
Even if it means sinning and turning away from the Lord.
You see, we can’t have it both ways in life. We can’t seek
the Lord and say we are committed to living for Him and His purposes while
going after what the world offers at the same time. We can’t allow ourselves to
be drawn into storing up treasures on earth because in doing so we abandon
storing up the treasures in heaven that Jesus told us to accumulate. He warned
us against pursuing things that were fleeting instead of going after rewards
that would be eternal and did so for good reason. And He knew it would be a
weakness for us as we were immersed in living a life in the world while we were
trying to not be of the world.
Thus the reason why Jesus told us we can’t serve God and
money (or anything else in and of the world that could take the place of money
in the statement). We have to choose one side or the other.
This is why today’s short scripture verse and its associated
message is so important for us today. We need to be reminded that it is good to
seek the Lord and that He in turn is good to those who seek Him. For when His
people are faithful to Him, then He shows His faithfulness in return. He also
gives them His protection, His healing, His blessing, and most of all, His
peace and love.
In the end translation, seeking the Lord and living in His favor
as a result are priceless endeavors and worth far more than anything else this
world might offer. We can get to that place when we resist the temptation to go
after the desires and trappings of the world and do so with the strength the
Lord is always ready to give you.
And it’s that strength from the Lord that is just one other
gift we get from Him when we realize that there is no better option for us in
life than to surrender to Him with all our heart and mind and soul, receiving the
fullness of His goodness in return.
Amen
In Christ,
Mark
