The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Now I will make you small among the nations, despised by mankind. The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks, who occupy the heights of the hill. Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

“Edom will become an object of horror; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds. As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown, along with their neighboring towns,” says the Lord,
“so no one will live there; no people will dwell in it.”

“Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets to a rich pastureland, I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.”

Jeremiah 49:15-19a

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Question: Is there any nation or collection of nations who could ever bigger than God?

The answer is easy because no one or nothing will ever exceed the greatness of the Lord God Almighty.

It hasn’t happened. It isn’t happening today. It will never happen.

Think about it for a moment. Go back to the scriptures and think about any great nation or empire that ever existed.

The Egyptians. They rose to power and prosperity, even holding many of the people of God in oppressive captivity.

What happened to them?

They were defeated by God and not just once either.

The Assyrians rose to power and brought judgment down on the northern kingdom of Israel, blossoming into an incredible force.

What happened to them?

Like the Egyptians, they were defeated by God.

The Babylonians quickly took the place of the Assyrians and they picked up with where they left off, defeating the southern kingdom of Judah as well as many surrounding nations but they didn’t last either.

You get it by now. They were defeated by God.

So were the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, and every empire even since. All have risen and fallen at the hands of the Lord God Almighty when they allowed their supremacy to surpass their belief and trust in the God who brought them into prosperity.

Given all this, it should come as no surprise that we find the Lord bringing down a nation who once was mighty and strong, a nation who although they partially showed allegiance to God, still was reluctant to completely submit to Him. Look at today’s scripture as we see the Lord continuing to speak to the country of Edom:

“Now I will make you small among the nations, despised by mankind. The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks, who occupy the heights of the hill. Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

“Edom will become an object of horror; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds. As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown, along with their neighboring towns,” says the Lord, “so no one will live there; no people will dwell in it.”

“Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets to a rich pastureland, I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.”  Jeremiah 49:15-19a

As we see from the words of the Lord Himself, Edom was about to be made “small among the nations”, lowered from a place of notoriety and renown to a place where the nation would be “despised by mankind” and an “object of horror”. Those who once looked upon the Edomites with respect and honor would now “be appalled” and “scoff because of all its wounds”.

How bad would God’s judgment be upon Edom?

Very bad for as we see God speak of His punishment, He tells of a Sodom and Gomorrah-like outcome and if you know anything about the Bible, you know that’s bad news. Edom and its neighboring towns would be destroyed and decimated to the point where no people would dwell there again. The Lord would drive the Edomites away “like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets to a rich pastureland”.

Edom had thought they were untouchable, that they had enough defense to ward off anyone who would come against it. They were wrong as the pride of their hearts deceived them into a having a false sense of security. In the end, God brought them down.

Fast forward to today and ask yourself how many nations, big and small, are presenting themselves as a force to be reckoned with. You could look at the obvious big players like the United States, Russia, and China but think about smaller rogue nations like Iran and North Korea as well. The number of nations is too extensive to list but they all hold one thing in common. All of them can and will be made small by the Lord God Almighty if they choose to rely on their own might and reject Him in the way they conduct business.

Every country of the world had better pay attention to all God has done in the history of mankind for again, every major empire has been brought low as God continuously reminded creation that He is the King of all kings and Lord of all lords.

It happened before and it will happen again until the world places God at the place of supremacy He deserves. It’s an absolute you can bank on.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
