The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“This is what the Lord says: ‘Your wound is incurable, your
injury beyond healing. There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your
sore, no healing for you. All your allies have forgotten you; they care nothing
for you. I have struck you as an enemy would and punished you as would the
cruel, because your guilt is so great and your sins so many. Why do you cry out
over your wound, your pain that has no cure? Because of your great guilt and
many sins I have done these things to you.’”
Jeremiah 30:12-15
This ends today’s reading
from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Do you know that you are afflicted with a disease with which there is no cure?
You are and don’t feel alone because you have lots of
company, a company of more than 7 billion people.
Here’s the kicker. Although this is the widest spread
epidemic ever, one that has existed more than 2,000 years, you have never heard
any worldwide health agency like the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) ever mention it and that’s sad because there would be a chance to warn a
multitude of people of their ailment and show them the way to hope from the
certain destruction they face.
More on that in a moment but I want to now look at our
scripture passage as we continue our study of Jeremiah 30. In it, we find clues
about the affliction that not only impacts every man and woman today but the
Old Testament Israelites in Jeremiah’s day. Look again at these words spoken by
the Lord:
“This is what the
Lord says: ‘Your wound is incurable, your injury beyond healing. There is no
one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sore, no healing for you. All your
allies have forgotten you; they care nothing for you. I have struck you as an
enemy would and punished you as would the cruel, because your guilt is so great
and your sins so many. Why do you cry out over your wound, your pain that has
no cure? Because of your great guilt and many sins I have done these things to
you.’” Jeremiah 30:12-15
The people of God, who had been commanded by Him to not
worship and bow down to false gods and idols (Exodus 20:2-3), chose to do so
anyways. As a result of their actions, God sent His judgment upon them,
inflicting a wound upon them that could not be healed. There would be no one
who would come to their aid when the Babylonians attacked and took them away
into a captivity that would last seventy years. No one would care about them as
God struck them down as He would one of His enemies.
How did a people who were once God’s pride and joy suddenly
become His enemy?
The answer lies in the incurable affliction they suffered
from, the affliction of sin.
You see, God hates sin. We know it because over and over
again, He imparted His judgment upon people who would willfully and
intentionally commit it. This is why there are so many scripture verses that
command believers to turn away from different transgressions. To not do so
would place someone in enmity with God and that’s no place anyone should want
to be. Just ask the Old Testament Israelites.
Coming back to current times, here’s just one more reason
God hates the sin that afflicts us:
It led to Him offering up His only Son, Jesus, as a living
sacrifice.
You see, God saw that His people were without hope because
of their sin affliction without intervention and atonement. And so out of His
great love for every man and woman, God allowed His Son Jesus, the unblemished
Lamb, to shed His blood on Calvary’s cross to pay the price for sin once and
for all. After Jesus, there would be no other sacrifice ever needed and anyone
who place their faith and trust in Him would gain the promise and hope of
salvation, liberated from the destruction of death and ushered into an
everlasting life where there would be no more sin ever again.
Friends, this is the good news we all should be hearing
every day but don’t. Yes, we are all infected with a disease that is incurable
but through Jesus, we can look forward to what lies ahead with excitement and
anticipation because we will be saved. God promised it and He never fails to
keep His promises. Hallelujah!
If you are in Christ, revel in celebration that your future
is secure. The best is yet to come, no matter what this earthly life brings.
If you have yet to receive Jesus as Savior and are destined
for destruction from your sin affliction, now is the time to change your life
forever. For:
“If you openly
declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from
the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are
made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are
saved.” Romans 10:9-10
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
