The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“In days to come you will understand this.”
Jeremiah 30:24b
This ends today’s reading
from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Have you ever tried to understand the ways of the Lord? How
He moves in the world and in your life? What He holds for your future?
I think we all have and I think we have also been left
frustrated most of the time when we have sought to try to know what God knows,
thwarted and blocked in comprehending the things we want to know.
Perhaps we would be better off not forcing the issue so much
and wait for the understanding to come when God wants it to.
It’s true, right?
We petition God a lot of the time like He is the One who
should beckon to our call, as if He is somehow subordinate to us.
I wonder how God feels about that. I’m pretty sure He doesn’t
appreciate it as it borders on disrespect and disregard for who He is and who
we are. Yes, as I wrote a few days ago, He is our God and we are His people but
we are not equals in any way. He is the Maker and Master of all things. He is
the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. Everybody and everything is below
Him and subject to His rule and reign. He is the One who orchestrates the way
things go and He is the sole source of wisdom, intelligence, and understanding.
What do the scriptures say about how we relate to God?
“For the foolishness
of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than
human strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:25
I think it puts things into perspective pretty well.
So when it comes to discerning the ways of God, I believe He
would have this advice for us:
“Wait, for when I choose to impart understanding on you, I
will do so.”
Or as the Proverbs advise us:
Trust in the Lord with
all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit
to Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
In other words, there will be a time of coming understanding
when we will know what God wants us to know, when He wants us to know it. All
we need to do is trust Him and not try to figure everything out on our own.
As we see in the final half verse of Jeremiah 30, God was
telling the Israelites this very thing as they were in the midst of seventy
days of exile in Babylon, the judgment God had placed upon them as a result of
their sinful worship of false gods and idols. They did not understand
everything that was happening to them nor could they grasp the blessed
redemption and deliverance they would experience once their punishment was over
and they were allowed to return to their homeland to rebuild their homes,
lives, and relationship with God. They could not comprehend the days of joy and
renewed peace that were ahead but God assured them that there would be days
ahead when they would get it and their questions would be answered.
Friends, as we contemplate the things of our world and our
lives, we are going to find out quickly that we can’t possible understand
everything because we are limited in our intellectual comprehension. God
designed us with limitations so that we will only know what He wants us to know
but rest assured there is a day of coming understanding ahead when we will have
our questions answered and we will understand fully.
It’s just one more thing to look forward as we travel this
Christian road to glory.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
