The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“Moreover, say to the royal house
of Judah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says to you, house
of David:’”
“‘Administer justice every morning;
rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed,
or My wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done—burn with no one to quench it.”
or My wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done—burn with no one to quench it.”
Jeremiah 21:11-12
This ends today’s reading from God's holy
word. Thanks be to God.
We are a
people who crave justice.
If you
don’t believe it, let something happen that is unfair and watch the almost
immediate reaction and demand for equity and impartiality.
Take
something like sports for example, one of my favorite passions (after the Lord
that is). If you are watching a game and a player commits an obvious infraction
or gets called for a foul when it was clear that an opponent simply tried to
draw the decision of the official by faking, and fans will get up in arms in a
moment’s notice, crying out about the injustice that has befallen their
favorite team or player. We simply carry a deep expectation that the things of
life will play out fairly.
We could
look at our court systems as another example where people become fixated with a
desire for perfect justice to be administered. If a person is guilty and the
evidence speaks to such, then a person is expected to be convicted.
But that’s
not always what happens, right?
In fact,
there have been many instances where mere technicalities or mistakes by
prosecutors have led to acquittals which many found to be unbelievable given
the propensity of proof that pointed toward guilt. These cases begin to erode
the public’s trust that justice will really be served by the court systems that
hold it as their charter.
So the
people of the world anticipate justice will happen but as we see in the
scriptures, God just doesn’t expect it, He commands and demands it such as in
our verses from Jeremiah, Chapter 21 today. Look again at these words:
“Moreover, say to the royal house of Judah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord.
This is what the Lord says to you, house of David:’”
“‘Administer justice every morning; rescue from the hand of the
oppressor the one who has been robbed, or My wrath will break out and burn like
fire because of the evil you have done—burn with no one to quench it.” Jeremiah
21:11-12
Note here
that there is no questioning what God is telling the royal house of Judah to
do. They were to administer justice daily, rescuing people from the hand of their
oppressors who obviously represent those considered unjust and unfair in this
passage. This went for decisions from the king on down.
As long
as justice was served, those doling out justice had nothing to worry about as
they would remain in God’s good favor. But if injustice was done, the outcome
would be frightfully different for God’s wrath would break out against those
who would choose evil over disobedience, the offenders burned by an
unquenchable fire.
Friends,
the Lord still directs justice to be done. Nothing has changed since the days
of Jeremiah and we would be well served to remain committed to pleasing Him
with the way we execute judgments in our courts. For the scriptures tell us
that God requires this:
That we act
justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God with every day that He
blessed us with (Micah 6:8).
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
