The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask
for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will
find rest for your souls.”
Jeremiah
6:16a
This ends today’s reading from God's holy
word. Thanks be to God.
Israel openly sinned in God’s sight without reservation,
blatantly disrespecting Him and violating His commands without any sense of
contrition. This obviously didn’t sit well with God and as we know, He sent destructive
judgment upon His people for their wicked actions, particularly their
worshiping of foreign gods and idols.
But what would keep the people of God from falling back
into their sinful ways after their seventy years of exiles ended?
As we will see in today’s single scripture verse, it was
all about finding the right way. Look again at the words of the Lord here:
This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where
the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah
6:16a
The Israelites were going to be taken away for a long time
but it wouldn’t be forever. After the expiration of the seventy year penalty
God imposed on them, the people of God would be permitted to return to the holy
land and rebuild their lives and faith. It was the latter that God was addressing
in today’s scripture verse.
Note here that the Lord mentions one at a crossroads but
the crossroads He is talking about only has two paths to choose from.
One path leads to sin and wickedness and transgression; the
other leads to righteousness and a lifestyle that is acceptable and pleasing in
God’s sight.
The latter is the good way that God speaks of in the
scripture verses. We are to ask where the good way is and then walk on that
path as it brings rest and peace to our souls, knowing we are living in a way
that God favors.
So who will lead us to the place where the good way is
located? And who will always help us stay on it once we find it?
The answer to both questions is easy because friends, we
don’t possess enough strength on our own to fight off temptation to sin nor cope
with the difficulties and hardships in life. We need the Lord because when left
to our own devices, we would all be like sheep left with no one to shepherd
them.
Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son Jesus, the Lamb
who came to take away the sins of the world, the Savior and Good Shepherd of us
all who said this:
“I am the way and the truth
and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John
14:6
That’s it, right? That’s the correct answer to our question
about finding the good way. For if you want to fulfill God’s command to seek and
find the good way to walk upon, you only need look as far as Jesus and then
choose to live like He did. When you do, He will always lead you along the
narrow way to life, the way that leads to God the Father and an eternity with
Him (Matthew 7:14).
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
