The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Who among you fears the Lord and
obeys the word of his servant?
Let the one who walks in the dark, who
has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.
But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from My hand: You will lie down in torment.
Isaiah
50:10-11
This ends today’s
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
A fundamental component of our
lives is the matter of trust and it can really be broken down into two options.
Option one is a life where a person
places all their trust in the Lord, believing that He is the source of all
things one would need.
The other option is trusting in
anything outside of the Lord. This may include trust in oneself, trust in
someone or something in the world outside of ourselves, or a combination of
both.
There really aren’t any other
choices.
So what option do you pick in life?
Maybe today’s scripture passage
from the closing verses of Isaiah 50 will help you select:
Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant?
Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name
of the Lord and rely on their God.
But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from My hand: You will lie down in torment. Isaiah 50:10-11
Here we find the Lord asking us a
basic question, one that will lay the groundwork as to whether we are opting
for the right way in life or not. Simply, He wants to know who respects and
reveres Him to the point of submissive obedience to His word, will, and way.
For if a person holds the Lord up to that level of esteem, then they through
their compliant actions are showing that they are placing their trust in Him.
After all, if they didn’t trust Him, then why would they follow anything He
tells them to do?
So who are candidates for this
place of trust in the Lord?
Well, the scriptures tell us they
are the people walking in the dark, those without a light to guide them. Try to
walk around in a place where there is absolute darkness, a place completely
void of any light, and you will find out in a hurry that you are incapacitated.
You can’t rely on your sense of sight because there is no light to reveal
anything around you. We may have a tendency to just freeze in place without the
ability to see, afraid to move in any direction because of the uncertainty that
it would be safe.
It’s in those places of life that
we can be assured that the Lord will always shine His light into the midst of
our darkness and light the way to where He wants us to go. All we need to do is
trust in the Lord and rely on Him fully. He will never let us down or lead us astray.
Conversely, there are people who
always want to try and light their own path. They walk in their own ways and
upon their own paths apart from the Lord. They make their own light and so feel
they have no need to any other. Their paths do not lead them to righteousness
but rather to the sinful wickedness that only brings on the torment of God’s
judgment.
Two options to trust in, the Lord
or ourselves, with each leading to a different path, a narrow path illuminated
by the Lord that leads to life or a wide path of destruction lit by the person
who decides to light their own way (Matthew 7:13-14).
Which path are you on today?
I pray it is on the path that shows
you trust the Lord.
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
