The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But My salvation will last forever, My righteousness will never fail.”

“Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken My instruction to heart: Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults. For the moth will eat them up like a garment; the worm will devour them like wool. But My righteousness will last forever, My salvation through all generations.”

Isaiah 51:6-8

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

We tend to allow our view of the world to be shaped by events and usually it isn’t good.

The threat of terrorism seems to be all around us these days, painting a picture of a world we should be afraid of because of a constant threat that exists. It seems particularly harrowing for Christians who we see beheaded at the hands of those who hate the belief system they hold faith in.

An epidemic of rioting has broken out in the last year or so, violent clashes in major metropolitan areas over matters of racial injustice. The destruction, looting, and violence paint a picture that our world, at least within the United States, is one defined by division and strife. Regardless of color, we were all created and made by the same God and yet we couldn’t be any less united within our states.

Even God’s beloved Israel isn’t safe these days with at least one other nation, Iran, threatening it with extinction. Indeed, this nation is suspected of developing a nuclear weapon that could easily wipe out Israel or other targeted nations. And this isn’t the only nuclear threatening going on. Go to the Far East and you’ll find North Korea regularly throwing warnings at South Korea and the United States regarding nuclear attack. These nations aren’t the only ones holding weapons of mass destruction and thus the threat of worldwide holocaust will always loom.

It’s a pretty gloomy picture, isn’t it?

Thank goodness we have today’s verses from Isaiah 51 as the Lord infuses some words of hope into this world that is ever slipping into dark times. Look at these verses again:

“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But My salvation will last forever, My righteousness will never fail.”

“Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken My instruction to heart: Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults. For the moth will eat them up like a garment; the worm will devour them like wool. But My righteousness will last forever, My salvation through all generations.”  Isaiah 51:6-8

Friends, rather than allow our eyes to be fixated on the world and all that is happening, perhaps we would be much better off following the guidance of our Lord and lift our eyes to the heavens to where He sits on His throne with His Son Jesus at His right hand. For there and there alone is where our hope lies.

There and there alone do we find a forever salvation.

You see, the Lord makes it very clear as to what will happen to this world at His appointed time. The earth is going to wear out and anyone left inhabiting it at the end (read those who have not placed their belief in Jesus as Savior) will die off like flies. The heavens are going to vanish as well. Imagine that for a moment. The heavens gone. In sum, everything that we know now is going to be no more, gone forever. It will be the worst day ever for those who chose to not believe in Jesus. But for the others, for those who placed their faith and trust in God’s one and only Son who will be the One who comes to judge this world, life will only just be beginning as they will inhabit the new earth and heaven with God the Father and Jesus, His Son and our Savior, forever.

Indeed, through Christ we have a forever salvation, a hope that no worldly threat can take away. Take the Lord’s instruction today to heart and never allow yourself to fear the threats of mere mortals, no matter how severe those threats might become. For no one can ever take away what God has given you through Christ Jesus.

Revel in this good news today and every day.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
