The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?”
“All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is
like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because
the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass
withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”
Isaiah 40:6-8
This ends this
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
A University of California study
discovered that in the course of one day, a woman will speak an average of
21,000 words compared to 7,000 words by a man. Don’t get caught up the
disparity as much as in the sheer volume of words we speak daily. Multiply that
out to get a weekly total and then a monthly and then annual one and the
statistics are staggering.
We speak a lot of words in our
lives. That’s a truth.
But there’s one other truth we
should think about, a sobering truth at that. Most of our words will not
endure. They are said and soon forgotten. Only a small fraction of spoken words
actually last to impact the lives of others once the person who spoke them has
passed on, mostly when the words of someone are captured in books that can
retain those words and offer them to generations of readers.
Still, those words are not words
that will endure forever. There are only certain special words that will be able
to do that as we see from our scripture passage taken from Isaiah, Chapter 40.
Look again at these verses from the Bible:
A voice says, “Cry
out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?”
“All people are
like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The
grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on
them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but
the word of our God endures forever.” vv. 3-5
Indeed, our words will not endure
because we will not endure. Life here on earth does not last forever. We will
wither with age until the day when our Creator deems our life is finished and
then we will fall away and be gone, leaving this world behind. We will not take
anything with us just as we did not come into the world with anything and even
what we leave behind will not last for eternity.
Nothing will endure except for the
words of the Lord which has survived every single second of every day of every
month of every year since they were spoken. They have spanned the test of time
and are just as powerful and valued today as ever. This is validated by the
truth that the Holy Bible, the enduring word of the Lord, is still the best-selling
book of all time. Through the ages, people cannot get enough of the authority, life
guiding direction, and wisdom that are found within its books.
It’s that authority, life guiding
direction, and wisdom that draw me to this word of the Lord each and every day
as I pray over it and allow the Holy Spirit to lead me in writing these daily
devotions, devotions I pray might endure as they are spoken through me by the
Lord Himself and the Bible assures us that the word of the Lord will endure forever.
Friends, I pray you are immersed in
the word of God each and every day. For if we are, then we can join together and
testify about it every day as I do in this ministry, echoing the wonderful
words of the author of Hebrews when they wrote:
The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it
judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
