The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and His resting place will be glorious.

Isaiah 11:10

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In this world, we are engaged in a war each and every day, a spiritual war for the possession of our very souls. On one side is good represented by the Lord who longs for us to join His side and live in righteousness and holiness, not just now but forever through Jesus, the prophesied “Root of Jesse” we hear of in Isaiah. On the other side is evil represented by Satan who desires to entrap every man and woman in their sinfulness, manifesting wickedness in the way they think, speak, and act. Contemporary Christian singer Chris August summed this up nicely in the lyrics of his song titled “Battle”:

There's a battle between good and evil
And it's raging inside of me
There's a struggle - it's God and the devil
It's Love against the Enemy.

Maybe you have experienced this battle raging within your heart and mind. I know I have.

So what do we do in the midst of this war we’re in the midst of each and every day as we walk onto the battlefield of life?

We turn to Jesus, the One who brings us victory.

Indeed, Satan cannot stand in the presence of Jesus who gained victory over him and the grave at the time of His resurrection. Satan thought he had defeated Jesus but in the end, he was only a part of God’s supreme plan to save all mankind through the atoning blood shed by His Son on Calvary’s cross. When Jesus triumphed over death and ascended to the heavens to sit at God’s right hand, He paved the way for all who place their faith, hope, and trust in Him to follow. In other words, victory was available for all people, Jew and Gentile.

Our scripture verse from Isaiah predicts this amazing victory as Jesus stands as a banner for all people. A banner is often raised to gather people to go into battle but it is also raised high after victory. In the case of our lives and the application of the scripture, both are equally applicable. For none of us stand a chance going it alone against Satan’s daily attacks. The only way we can assure daily triumph over the evil one is to go to the banner raised high by Jesus where we can join His forces, forces that will never be defeated. And when that victory is won, Jesus will continue to raise His banner higher and higher and higher, continuing to draw more and more people to Him, those who are seeking to be a part of the victory themselves.

Friends, yes, there is battle raging in and around us each and every day but if we are in Jesus, the one through which we find victory, we will never be defeated. It’s impossible. For through Him and the promise of eternal life, nothing we come up against in this life will ever be able to remove the victory we have gained. Nothing. Through Jesus, we have a hope now and forever more, a hope that can’t be found anywhere else.

Going back to the Chris August song, his chorus provides us encouragement to claim the victory that is rightfully ours in Christ Jesus:

Life's a fight of wrong and right
That's tearing me apart
Oh but what the cross has done
Yeah the world will try to battle for my heart
But the war is already won.

Live as people of victory, a victory that we find in Jesus. The war is already won. Alleluia!

Amen.
