The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

I will make people scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.

Isaiah 13:12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

For the last two days, we have looked at a two part series on the things that make God mad. Given that knowledge, today we start to examine signs that will indicate that God is mad.

The first sign is found in the 12th verse of Isaiah, Chapter 13:

I will make people scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.

When something becomes rarer to find, its value increases. This could be looked at as positive in most circumstances, except in the instance we’re looking at in this verse. This is because the scarcity of people will result from God’s judgment coming upon the people of Babylon. In other words, He is going to wipe out most of the Babylonian population to the point that it will be rare to find anyone still alive.

This is the first ominous sign that God is mad with a nation. For when God’s wrath comes in judgment, annihilation will follow. It happened to Babylon as God’s promise of punishment was fulfilled. It happened to the Assyrian empire as well just as God said it would. And don’t think for a moment that it won’t happen again in our present time to any nation who chooses to turn from God and His will to instead pursue its own purposes.

God will not be ignored and anyone who attempts to do so will find Him getting their attention in perilous ways, ways that will include destruction of people and property. Every major empire that tried to rely on its own power and might has fallen to the Lord God Almighty. Every single one and that trend will continue as long as this earth exists. That is truth grounded in the word of God.

Need another example of how God will bring annihilation to people who choose sin and wickedness over righteousness, something that we know makes Him mad?

Consider the fact that His Son Jesus will one day return to earth, not as the submissive, suffering Savior as was the case when He first walked with us but rather as a powerful, just Judge of all mankind. Those who placed their faith, trust, and hope in Him will be placed on His right. Those who chose to not believe in Him as Savior will be placed on the left (Matthew 25:31-46) before being cast into the lake of fire, consumed in a moment, life ending in a flash (or in this case, a flashpoint). For those who remain, they will be taken by Jesus to the new heaven and earth to live forever with Jesus, the Son, and God, His Father and ours (Revelation 21:1-4). The promise of eternal life and salvation will become a reality.

Friends, the good news today is that we have a choice we can make. We don’t have to live in a way that makes God mad and none of us should want to. We can opt now and forever to live as Jesus lived, to live fully in righteousness, to live in a way that glorifies and magnifies God, to live in a way that will always draw His favor vice His ire.

My prayer today is that you choose Jesus and His righteousness, sealing your place with Him and God for eternity while ensuring your life will be preserved, not destroyed.

You’ll never regret it if you do but I promise you that you will if you don’t.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
