A PRAYER FOR ELECTION DAY

Can I pray for you in any way? Send any prayer requests to OurChristianWalk@aol.com.

In Christ, Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Endow the king with Your justice, O God, the royal son with Your righteousness. May he judge Your people in righteousness, Your afflicted ones with justice.

May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor. May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. May the desert tribes bow before him and his enemies lick the dust. May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores bring tribute to him. May the kings of Sheba and Seba present him gifts. May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.

For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.

Long may he live! May gold from Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for him and bless him all day long. May grain abound throughout the land; on the tops of the hills may it sway. May the crops flourish like Lebanon and thrive like the grass of the field. May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun.

Then all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.

Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. Praise be to His glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory.

Amen and Amen.

This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.

Psalm 72

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

The day is finally here. It’s election day in America.

After a long and hard fought campaign, the people will choose who will lead their nation for the next four years. And as we have entered into this day, we should not only be in the spirit of democracy and a celebration of our freedoms to vote and select who will lead us but we should also be in prayer for whoever comes out the victor.

So what should we pray for? I think the prayer found in the 72nd Psalm can serve as a template for what we should he hoping for. Let’s look at some of the things mentioned about the king which will equally apply to our new president.

1. We should be praying for God to impart or endow His justice on whoever is elected, a justice which will help our elected leader judge the people in righteousness or in other words make right judgments.

2. We should be praying for God to place His righteousness within the new president. The leader of this nation should be able to be trusted and have the utmost integrity in all his dealings both at home and abroad. God’s righteousness will ensure this is so.

3. We should pray that the leadership of our new president will result in prosperity for all of God’s people.

4. We should pray that the righteousness given to our elected leader will spill over to all people so that the good fruits they bear as a result of living in a way pleasing to God will make our nation blessed and favored in God’s sight.

5. We should pray that our new president will care for the afflicted and needy. Jesus said that when we do unto the least it is as if we are doing it unto Him. I pray this is the pervasive yearning of our collective society with the lead coming from the very top.

6. We should pray that our new Commander in Chief will soundly defend our nation, its people, and its principles. No oppressor or enemy should be permitted to prosper during his tenure.

7. We need to pray that our new leader is on such a firm footing with the Lord that all nations will look at America and want to be like us, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. And we should be willing to be a blessing to other nations as well.

8. Finally, we should always be in prayer for our new leader, not just now as the results are being tallied but every day that he is in power afterwards. We should pray that God will bless him with wisdom and direction so that God’s will is done in the way this country is led.

Friends, as we move toward either an incumbent in office for another term or a newcomer who will give the presidency his best shot, we should be in prayer, just as Israel was for their leader more than 2,000 years ago. I’m grateful that they left us a blueprint for a proper prayer for Election Day and beyond.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
