The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Take me away with you—let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers.

I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.

His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.

My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.”

Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.

Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages. Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom—there I will give you my love. The mandrakes send out their fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, both new and old, that I have stored up for you, my beloved.

Song of Songs 1:4; 2:3b, 6, 10-13; 4:16; 7:11-13

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

If you are in a relationship, how much do you treasure the companionship of your partner? Do you value being with them more than anything or do you tend to take them advantage?

As we look at the second of an eight devotion series on the principles of a loving, Godly relationship from the perspective of a woman’s attitude toward her man, we will see from the Song of Songs the depth of how Shulammite cherished her time with Solomon as the word of God encourages us to do likewise within our own relationships. Look at these verses containing words spoken by Shulammite to Solomon:

As we consider these scriptures and the love condition of Shulammite’s heart, I think we see some specific qualities revealed, qualities that show her deep affection and longing for her mate.

1. She longed for him with eagerness.

Take me away with you—let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. And so when a woman and a man are in a relationship that is loving and Godly, they cherish being with one another so much that they can’t wait to reunite when they are apart. This eagerness for being together again dominates their thoughts so much during separation that their reunion becomes blessedly special and precious.

2. She found great delight and sweetness in being with him.

I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.

What do you value about being with your mate? What made you fall in love with them in the first place?

The answers to these questions form the delight you find in your partner and it’s those qualities that lead us to cherish their companionship when we have it just as Shulammite expressed so poetically. When we take stock in the things we love about our mate, we find ourselves looking forward to being with them to experience all the things about them that we love.

3. She treasured his embrace.

His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.

There’s something special about being held. We learn it from infancy as we are cradled in love in our father’s and mother’s arms. We continue to experience it as we grow older and find ourselves needing consoled or cuddled. In relationships, it’s a special expression of intimacy, an expression that says, “I want to be near you”. As I do training with people who have been apart for long periods of time, I consistently find the women longing, not solely for sex, but just to be held by their partner again, to be back in their arms snuggling and cuddling. Couples in loving, Godly relationships relish every opportunity to be in one another’s arms.

4. She found great joy in knowing Solomon wanted to be with her as much as she wanted to be with him.

Something special happens when we show our partner how much we cherish their companionship. They start to reciprocate.

It’s obvious that Shulammite desired Solomon so very much and held him in the highest esteem as a partner. As we read the words he spoke back to her, we find that he eagerly wanted to be with her just as much. The best relationships are ones where both partners equally value one another, willing to self-sacrifice and compromise within the relationship to bring their partner the most love and joy possible. Shulammite and Solomon had such a relationship.

5. She loved anticipating the chance to share herself with her mate.

Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.

Since the best relationships involve mutual admiration and self-sacrifice, then we could calculate that each partner would look forward to giving themselves freely to their mate. As we read these words of Shulammite, it’s obvious she looks forward to sharing herself fully in love with Solomon, a love attitude I think we all could aspire to.

6. She yearned to share and experience life and love with her partner.

Several years ago, I had to do a lot of traveling between my home in Virginia Beach and the place where I was assigned in Maryland. That traveling amounted to 7 to 8 hours weekly and although I hated the drive, I came to really love how it created time for my wife and I to just talk for hours about everything, free from distraction. We still love getting on the road to travel places, experiencing new things but even more so cherishing every moment we get to be together, no matter where that might be.

Looking at Shulammite’s words, we see the same love attitude expressed. She wanted to share so many experiences with Solomon, whether it was going to the countryside together or spending the night in villages or exploring the vineyards. She saw so many rich opportunities to get out and experience God’s creation and she longed to do it with the man she loved.

Friends, when God brings us into a relationship, He does so expecting that the woman cherishes the companionship he has blessed her with and vice versa for the man. It’s one of the core elements of a loving, Godly relationship and we should ever give Him all our praise when we are fortunate enough to experience it. But there is something even deeper for us to consider here before we end today’s study.

For as we consider this matter of cherishing companionship, perhaps the best way we can adopt the attitude in the way we relate to our partners is by first adopting the attitude in the way we approach God, the One who should be our first love because we only know how to love because of Him (1 John 4:19). When we cherish our companionship with God, then we will live in His will and ways, loving as He loves, cherishing as He cherishes, and committing to our partners as He commits to us.

As we find in all other ways of life, God is to be first in all things because all things come from Him, to include the loving, Godly relationships He blesses us to be a part of.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—for your love is more delightful than wine.

Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes; your name is like perfume poured out. No wonder the young women love you!

How handsome you are, my beloved! Oh, how charming! And our bed is verdant.

Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men.

Listen! My beloved! Look! Here he comes, leaping across the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look! There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the lattice.

My beloved is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand. His head is purest gold; his hair is wavy and black as a raven. His eyes are like doves by the water streams, washed in milk, mounted like jewels. His cheeks are like beds of spice yielding perfume. His lips are like lilies dripping with myrrh. His arms are rods of gold set with topaz. His body is like polished ivory decorated with lapis lazuli. His legs are pillars of marble set on bases of pure gold. His appearance is like Lebanon, choice as its cedars. His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem.

Song of Songs 1:2-3, 16; 2:3a, 8-9; 5:10-16

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What does a loving, Godly relationship look like?

The answers are found in the Song of Songs, the last of the three wisdom books attributed to Solomon, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes preceding it. We will spend time studying relationship from the perspective of the man and woman over the study of this book, the woman coming first since she is first to speak. We’ll also look at the role friends play in supporting Godly relationships as they are a part of the dialogue in these eight chapters of scripture as well.

And so our journey through the Song of Songs and our subsequent look at love begins. Today, we’ll examine how a woman being complimentary toward her man is part of having a loving, godly relationship.

As we begin, it’s of interest that we don’t know who the main characters of this dialogue are until we are well into reading the book. In fact, we don’t know that the name of the woman speaking until Chapter 6. Her name is Shulammite. We’re not sure of her background but it’s very obvious that she is in love with Solomon and vice versa as we will see when we examine the principles of a loving, Godly relationship from the male perspective. The essence of what we need to take away is that love, when it is the way God intends it to be, is immersed in unconditional, deep affection that is two-way. That affection is displayed in many ways and today we will see it shown in the way partners admire one another with a close-up look at Shulammite’s complimentary attitude toward Solomon.

I don’t know about you but I simply adore her spirit of love as expressed through her words. They are words from the heart as she details all the things she cherishes about her mate. Note there are no words of criticism, although there is always room for that in a relationship. Instead, Shulammite stays focused on all the positive things that she appreciates about Solomon.

The delightful kisses she receives from his mouth. The pleasing way he smells when she is near him. His handsome appearance and the charm that accompanied his good looks.

Yes, there were many men she could have, alluded to as trees of the forest in her poetic words, but she had one that bore sweet fruit, a man that blessed her with nourishing love. Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men.

Shulammite loved Solomon for his body as well and discussed it in affectionate terms, taking time to compliment each part. His head being purest gold, his eyes being similar to doves, his cheeks like perfume, lips dripping with myrrh, arms rods of gold, body polished ivory, and legs pillars of marble on bases of pure gold. His arms are rods of gold set with topaz. His body is like polished ivory decorated with lapis lazuli.

In sum, Shulammite simply calls her mate, Solomon, altogether lovely.

The word of God would ask the ladies several questions regarding their relationships:

How do you view your partner?

What would you say about him to others? What do you say to them? Are you more complimentary or critical?

Do you seek out the positives in your mate or do you take them for granted, more easily drawn to the negative things about them?

These are all questions you should ponder and I pray when you do, you’ll consider the heart attitude of Shula mite for I believe the Lord is using her as a prime example of what a loving, Godly relationship looks like from the perspective of the woman toward her man.

Today’s call is to be complimentary, showing your mate just how much you appreciate him. Tomorrow, we’ll look at the importance of cherishing companionship.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter:

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

It’s been a great journey through Ecclesiastes, a word derived from the Greek “EkklÄ“siastÄ“s” which simply means preacher. Surely, the word of God has preached to us about many things over the last two and a half months.

And so as we close Ecclesiastes, we also close this ten part series on Living This Thing Called Life with one final piece of guidance from the Lord, guidance that, if followed, will always keep us walking the path of righteousness and away from the dangers of sin. Take a look at His words again:

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter:

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

In concluding the matter and this book, the Teacher, Solomon, provides two final orders to the reader regarding how to live this thing called life.

First, we are to fear God. We will all be judged for every deed, even what we do in secret for nothing is concealed from His eyes (Matthew 10:26). This should lead us to be mindful of everything we are doing, everything we are thinking, and everything we are saying. For when we come before the judgment throne of the Lord God Almighty, no one should want to be standing there having lived in wickedness after violating His commandments through their life. The bottom line is that the Lord demands our respect and reverence. He hates sin because it was sin that led Him to sacrifice His only Son Jesus so we might have a chance for salvation and redemption for our wrongs. He did it out of His love for us and the best way we can express our gratitude to Him is to live in obedience, to live in the way He desires for us to live. This leads to the second order He gave us.

For we are to keep God’s commandments in the way we live. He is God and when He tells us to do something, it isn’t optional. He commands it and we are to do it. Period. As we live this thing called life, we are to seek and then follow the Lord’s will and way. We do this through three important disciplines:

1. We study the word of God daily.

People will always look a little surprised when I tell them I write every day, a look that says, “Wow! That’s really a lot.” But think about it a minute. Isn’t it the Lord’s desire for us to set aside time every day to read and learn from His word? There is no doubt that He expects it. We are to seek to be more like His Son Jesus every day and we can only do that if we know Him and the way He lived. And the only way we will know Him and the way He lived is if we read about Him in the Bible and then seek to model His ways. At the root of the word Christian is the word Christ and so Christians are to be Christ-like. God’s word shows us how to be just that and share with us all that God commands, commands that Jesus perfectly carried out.

2. We pray daily.

As we study the word of God, we need to be in prayer over that word as well as our lives and the lives of others. Communication is the lifeblood of relationship and a healthy relationship with the Lord comes through regularly talking to Him. That is the essence of prayer, a daily communication with the One who made us and can do all things. God is always there for us, always listens to us, and always answers our prayers in a way that leads us to His will and way. Want to make sure you are doing all the right things? Pray over every thought, word, and deed before you do it and then follow the Lord’s guidance in obedience. He will always lead you to righteousness and to live in His favor.

3. Commune with the Holy Spirit daily.

If you read God’s word and pray unto Him daily, you will be in the presence of the Holy Spirit where you can freely commune with Him. When Jesus left, He promised He would never leave us but rather that He would send us a Counselor to lead and guide us through life. That Counselor is the Holy Spirit (John 14:26) who is always that still small voice that leads us to do what the Lord commands, that consciousness that makes us feel good when we have done as the Lord desires and convicts us in guilt when we know we have fallen short. As I write daily, it’s the Holy Spirit who speaks to my heart and mind and soul, giving me the words to say, words meant by the Lord to encourage, inspire, and convert. I count it as my greatest blessing each and every day, and my most valued relationship. For no one can lead me in the ways of the Lord as the Holy Spirit can as He illuminates the word of the Lord and directs me in accordance with God’s will.

Read the scriptures and pray every day. Develop a close and personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. Allow all of these disciplines to make you more like Jesus.

Do these things as you live this thing called life and you will be well on your way toward fulfilling the commandments of God and showing Him the reverence He expects and deserves.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.

The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.

Ecclesiastes 12:9-12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Today is the next to the last installment this devotional series titled, “Living This Thing Called Life” and the guidance from the word of God is arguably more important than any of the others we have received so far.

That guidance is simply to seek, receive, and embrace the wisdom of God.

Look at these verses from Ecclesiastes, Chapter 12:

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.

The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. (vv. 9-12)

The Teacher mentioned here is, of course, Solomon, identified in the very first verse of this book as the son of David. Given this, there should be no surprise about the association of wisdom with the words that Solomon wrote because when given a chance to ask for anything from God as he was to assume the reign of Israel, Solomon chose wisdom, wisdom from God so he could properly lead the people under his charge.

We know God delivered on that request and Solomon gained a solid reputation in and outside of Israel as a man of wisdom and discernment. He pondered and sought out the right words to say and write from God and then shared the direction he received in proverbs and other forms of imparted knowledge for the people. Subsequently, all the words that Solomon wrote or spoke were upright and true because they originated from an upright and true God, the one and only real God who reigned as Master over all creation.

These wise words of Solomon, part of the collection of inspired words of God we get to study today, serve to goad us, to lead us on the paths of righteousness by the Lord who is our Shepherd. As we lead this thing called life, we’re to submit ourselves to the leading of the Shepherd, seeking, receiving, and embracing His wisdom just as Solomon did and then ensuring we share that wisdom with others in the words we speak and write.

Friends, this is the ultimate goal I set to meet every day through The Christian Walk ministry, that I might seek and receive the Lord’s wisdom as I study and reflect on His word, then share the wisdom He gives me with my readers through words that are upright and true. He’s ready to do the same with anyone else who submits to His will and way with a servant’s heart.

In the end translation, this Christian journey we’re on is a blessed one because we are not walking alone. The Lord God Almighty, our wisdom-imparting Shepherd, is alive and with us every step of the way as we live this thing called life.

All thanks and praise unto Him for this and for all that He does in love to care for us and use us for His purposes.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
