The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.
On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever.
Revelation 21:22-27, 22:5
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
The new Jerusalem, the eternal home for all Christian believers, will be like nothing anyone has ever witnessed. In yesterday’s message, we read of the golden city’s immensity, running 1,400 miles along each of the four jasper walls. Each wall will have three, thick pearl gates, each named after one of the twelve tribes of Israel, they will be supported by twelve foundations, each decorated with a different precious stone and named after one of Jesus’ twelve apostles.
This is what our forever home will look like but in today’s message, the scriptures tell us of the environment we will live in within this new magnificent and holy city. Look at these closing verses from Revelation, chapter 21 and verse 5 of chapter 22:
I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.
On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Vv.22-27
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever. v.5
When we enter into the promised eternal life through our belief in Jesus, we will enter into our best life ever, a life that will be filled with ultimate experiences. In today’s passage, the Word of God shares four of these ultimates with us. They include:
1. Ultimate worship.
I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
There will be no more need for a dedicated place of worship because our new life will be one where worship is happening constantly and perpetually. It will be unceasing as we live in the presence of God the Father and Jesus, His Son, the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
Think about a time when we will bring our praise and honor to the Lord 24/7. That’s ultimate worship and it will happen forever in the new Jerusalem, God’s dwelling place with His people (21:3).
2. Ultimate light.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever.
When the present Heaven and earth pass away, so too will be the concept of day and night as God first made it. For one of the many things that God will make new is the absence of the sun and moon. They will no longer be needed because the scriptures tells us that the glory of God will provide the ultimate light power for the city and its people with Jesus as the lamp that reflects that light everywhere. There “will be no more night” nor will anyone need “the light of a lamp” or “the light of the sun” because God will “give them all the light they need. And so everyone who dwells in new Jerusalem will “walk by” His light as they “reign forever and ever”.
Can you even imagine how spectacular this is going to be, living every day in the midst of the Lord’s light with darkness eliminated forever?
It’s going to be simply superb and splendid.
3. Ultimate safety.
On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.
In biblical times, walled cities had to close their gates and place guards on watch at night to prevent being attacked under the cloak of darkness.
In present times, we lock the doors of our dwelling places for much the same reason because it seems that the darkness is synonymous with evil acts and deeds. People who willingly to sin grievously against another, rarely do so in the light of day.
Now, picture a time when you will never ever worry about evil or wickedness again. That time in your mind will happen when Christians inhabit and reside in the new Jerusalem.
We know Satan and all those who aligned with him were cast into Hell before the present Heaven and earth passed away, taking sin with it. Now, in the freshly crafted holy city, there will be no need to ever close the gates because malevolence won’t exist. It will be a time and place of ultimate safety for all those who are dwelling under the light of God forever.
4. Ultimate purity.
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
And that leads us to this fourth ultimate, for every single inhabitant of the New Jerusalem will be as pure as the God and Savior they dwell with. Just as God made everything else new, so too does He wash every single Christian clean by the blood of His Son, the Lamb. These are the people who placed their belief in Jesus and therefore found themselves in His Book of Life, people who will experience ultimate purity as they now live a sinless, everlasting existence in God’s new holy city.
Friends, anyone who doesn’t want this for their eternal destiny is nothing less than a fool. For in shunning the beauty of the new Jerusalem and God’s invitation to live there, they are rejecting the ultimates that come with salvation, instead choosing an eternal life in darkness filled with suffering, torment, and damnation.
Let us be in prayer for all non-believers today, asking that their eyes be open to the future destruction that lies ahead so that their hearts and minds might be turned to the cross and Jesus who is waiting to save them if they would just believe in Him as their Savior.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
