The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

Romans 5:6-11

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Think about where all mankind was at one time.

From the great fall instigated by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden onward, every single person was afflicted with sin. It was the largest global spiritual affliction ever and it still continues to infect and plague everyone today.

This sin infection placed all people in the worst place possible, at odds with the God who was and is the Maker and Master of all things.

God hates sin. He always has and always will, and anyone who sins is His enemy. That means that every human being who has ever lived stands no chance because no mere mortal person can stand and defend themselves against an all powerful, immortal God.

It’s not a great place to be and here’s the thing, short of God changing things, not one individual had any hope for a future outside of destruction. Only the Lord could initiate any opportunity for reconciliation and that’s exactly what He did.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

It’s truly amazing grace, right?

God had every right to punish us with the fullest measure of His wrath but instead He chose to love and save us, doing so in His perfect time. Look again at our verses as we continue looking at Romans 5:

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” Romans 5:6-11

When we were at our most vulnerable and powerless state, Jesus was sent to die for us, to pay the price for our transgressions and purchase our pardon. Jesus didn’t die for those who were right and righteous in His Father’s eyes. Rather, He did what He did while mankind was still immersed in sinfulness and enemies of God.

This is how God showed our love for us. He didn’t condemn mankind to perish but rather offered a way to be justified before Him (made just as if we had never sinned). Sin left a person stained by iniquity but the blood of Jesus washed away those stains and made a Christian believer white as snow, no longer blemished.

Through belief in Jesus, a person automatically finds themselves reconciled to God through the redeeming work of His Son who He sent to die in their place, saved and loved in His perfect time and in a perfect way that only He, God, could design.

Because of this, Christians have the privilege to rejoice every day because their future is secure in Jesus. Their belief in God’s Son as Savior brings them a victory that can never be taken away, a victory that will one day result in the glory of eternal life.

Thanks be to God for His love.

Thanks be to God for His grace and mercy.

And thanks be to God for the gift of His Son Jesus and the salvation He brings.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
