The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

So are wise people really better off than fools?

Do poor people gain anything by being wise and knowing how to act in front of others?

Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.

Ecclesiastes 6:8-9 (New Living Translation)

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Can you tell me what will happen tomorrow? Or the day after that? Or next week or next month or next year?

Yes, you have an idea of what you think will happen but admit it, you don’t REALLY know what is GOING to happen, right?

We are a people who tend to always be looking ahead. There’s consistent talk about the future, about what our plans are and what we hope to achieve.

Many students are graduating from high school and college this time of year and a majority of them have aspirations for the years ahead, whether that is continuing in education or moving onto a career in some field.

Career counselors will ask people to shape a five year plan, asking them to set goals to achieve in the workplace.

People constantly consider where they plan on being when they get to the point of retirement, especially when it comes to finances.

We are forward-looking people and I’m not saying that is bad, per se, but we have to do it in moderation because if we fail to then we become so focused on tomorrow that we lose sight of today. This is the message God’s word brings for us to day from Ecclesiastes, Chapter 6. Look at these words:

Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.

Our scripture reminds us that we can desire tomorrow and things that have yet to happen but the truth of the matter is that no one knows what tomorrow holds except for God. We are to enjoy what we have and what we have is today, right here and right now.

Today is chock full of amazing opportunities to experience the Lord in special ways because He is always moving in and around us. Each encounter we have with another person is a chance to share fellowship and love. Each day we get to experience creation afresh with its associated changes, changes we too often take for granted. Each day we get to breathe in and out, taking in life sustaining oxygen which reminds us clearly of God’s grace and mercy. For in our sinfulness, we don’t deserve the days we’re given and yet the Lord allows us to have each day to live and love and serve Him.

You get the point. We are to revel in today, giving thanks and praise in everything to the only One who is worthy to receive it. We are to enjoy today and what we have as tomorrow may never come but if it does, then it becomes today and another opportunity to celebrate.

What does another word of the Lord proclaim?

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 (NRSV)

Rejoice today and be glad. If you’re reading this, God has granted you one more day of living.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
