OUR STRONG TOWER

In Christ, Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The wealth of the rich is their fortifiedcity; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.

Proverbs 10:15, 18:10-11

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

NOTE: From Proverbs, Chapter 10 through Chapter 22:16, Solomon writes a series of individual proverbs for us to consider. I will try and group similar proverbs in my devotions as I cover what Solomon wrote over these chapters.

You are my strong tower
Shelter over me
Beautiful and mighty
Everlasting King
You are my strong tower
Fortress when I'm weak
Your name is true and holy
And Your face is all I seek

This chorus is from a song called “Strong Tower” written and performed by Kutless, one of the best Christian music groups today. Through their words, we are reminded of the comfort and assurance we should remember we have in the Lord, who indeed is our strong Tower, the beautiful and mighty Shelter who shields and protects us, the everlasting King of kings whose name is true and holy as He reigns over creation and rules over us. He and He alone is our Fortress in times of weakness, ever ready to lend us the power and strength we need to persevere through trial, tribulation, affliction, heartache, and hardship.

So where did the premise of the song derive from?

It’s no surprise that it came from the scriptures. Look at the word of Solomon in the following proverb:

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10

In the Lord, we find safety and protection in a world that is filled with sin, wickedness, and evil. This isn’t just a 21st century problem. The world has been like this for as long as there has been sin intermingled with civilization. This is why we find Solomon writing about it more than 2,000 years ago.

But as God’s word exhorts over and over again, “Do not be afraid.” For the Lord is with those who place their hope and trust in His true and holy name and if He is with them, then nothing can be against them (Romans 8:31). This is why the righteous run to Him in times of need for the scriptures are truth and when believers turn to the Lord, their strong tower, they will be safe.

So why doesn’t everyone run to the Lord’s strong tower?

Because they are building their own tower. Look at these proverbs:

The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale. Proverbs 18:11

So many people look to things outside of the Lord for their sense of security and peace. Often, it is money as wealth becomes the fortification that people who have it stand on. The problem is that money can nowhere near provide what the Lord can, particularly when we begin to consider salvation. No amount of money can save a person. Only belief and trust in Jesus Christ can do that.

It’s little wonder why Jesus implored us to store up treasures in heaven vice treasures on earth (Matthew 6:19-20). It’s because seeking treasures in heaven will always lead us to the Lord who is not only our strong tower but also our blessed provider.

With this, where do you place your trust? Do you place your faith in things of the world and the many towers it offers? Or will you place your loyal confidence in the one and only strong tower, the only One who can truly save you now and forever?

In the end, there’s only one true answer because there’s only one true tower, the Lord God Almighty. As you seek and find His righteousness, rejoice in the shelter and protection He provides.

Amen.
