The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:

“Dominion and awe belong to God; He establishes order in the heights of heaven. Can his forces be numbered? On whom does his light not rise? How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure? If even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in his eyes, how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—a human being, who is only a worm!”

Job 25:1-6

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As we come to Chapter 25 of Job, our journey through the book has taken us through a series of exchanges. God with Satan, Job with his wife, and for the majority of the book to this point, Job with his three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar…exchanges that finish with the six verses in this chapter. Still to come are exchanges between the still yet to be introduced Elihu, Job and his friends, and last but certainly not least, God, who has the final word with Job and  his friends, reminding them and us about His almighty and infinite power and authority.

Truly, as Bildad states in the opening statement of his final words:

“Dominion and awe belong to God…”

But do we honor God this way in our lives? Do we live as if we are under the rule of His might within His kingdom? Do we live in reverent awe of our Maker and Creator?

My fear is that we don’t do it enough or, in some cases, at all, either taking God for granted for what He has done for us or, worse yet, not even acknowledging Him period. We too often go through day-by-day living life without reference to the One who gives it. God becomes an afterthought instead of a forethought. And we fail to allow the Lord who “establishes order in the heights of heaven” to establish order in our everyday lives.

Friends, there’s something terribly amiss here and I wonder how God feels about it. Based on what we study in the scriptures, do we not understand His wrath when He is disrespected and disregarded? The ancient people of Israel, if they could counsel us today, would certainly advise us to not take God for granted as they too often did, opting for their own desires over His. God too often took a backset to what their desires were in life and God displayed His dominion through consequence…consequence that was less than a pleasant experience for those it fell on.

Maybe we’re just a bit too comfortable under the blessing of God’s amazing grace…a gift He grants to us out of His amazing love. If only we would show the same love and praise and honor and glory His way…every second of every minute of every hour of every day He grants.

You see, we serve an awesome God, One who never rests in His care for us, even when we fail to respect and worship Him. We need to remember this. No one, and I mean no one, looks after you and I as God does. No one else is ever present with absolute wisdom and power at the ready, able to help us through whatever circumstances we may face. We would be well served to never forget that.

Indeed, we need to put God first in our lives because He IS first. He existed before creation. You don’t get more first than that.

And where does this put us?

One word: subordinate.

We along with everything else that God has created. All things are under His dominion and He and He alone is to be worshipped.

Friends, our God is an awesome God. And if we don’t acknowledge it with every beat of our hearts He provides, rest assured He will remind us of our place before Him. He and He alone is worthy of our honor, glory and praise. Today and every day, let’s all give Him what He deserves.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
