The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found. From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.

Revelation 16:17-21

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Six bowls of wrath had been poured out by angels on the earth, bringing judgment on the unbelievers of the world. Ugly, festering sores broke out on all the bodies of those who names were not found in the Lamb’s Book of Life (those who refused to believe in Jesus as Savior) and the sun was intensified to scorch and sear their skin. All the waterways of the word were turned to blood before the world was plunged into utter darkness and the Euphrates River was caused to dry up so that kings could gather at the beckoning of demonic spirits for an ultimate spiritual war with God at Armageddon.

This is a summation of what we’ve seen so far in Revelation 16 and in today’s passage from the closing verses of this chapter, we see the climax as the seventh angel spills his bowl out. Look again at those words here:

Here we see that right after the seventh bowl is “poured out” into “the air” that a “loud voice” proclaimed from “the throne” inside “the temple”:

“It is done!”

What was done?

We know it was God’s unleashing of judgment on the earth, a judgment which began with Jesus breaking seven seals from a scroll He took from God’s right hand. It continued with the sounding of seven trumpets, each with their respective punishments set forth on the earth, and the seventh trumpet led to the seven angels spilling a bowl of wrath apiece, culminating with the final bowl in today’s passage.

What happened when this last bowl was poured out?

The scriptures tell us of the unfathomable calamity that followed, calamity which included:

1. Flashes of lightning from the Heavens.

2. Atmospheric rumblings.

3. Peals of thunder.

4. An extremely severe earthquake unlike any before it. The scriptures tell us that “no earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth” and its magnitude was “so tremendous” that “the great city” of Jerusalem “split into three parts” while “the cities of the nations collapsed”. Further, “every island fled away and the mountains could not be found” in a mass disappearance of land masses.

5. “Huge hailstones” that were dispatched “from the sky”. Each of these hailstones weighed “about a hundred pounds” as they descended onto the ungodly, unbelieving people who “cursed God on account of the plague” with no inclination to repent of their sins and seek to establish with the only God who could save them from Hell. I would think that any person struck with one of these hailstones would have to have been killed instantly.

In the end, “God remembered Babylon the Great”, which we discussed in a prior message as representing the sinful, wicked world that was receiving “the cup filled with the wine of the fury” of the Lord’s “wrath”. We’ll look into this further as we turn to Revelation, chapter 17 tomorrow.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
