The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.
As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”
Revelation 8:12-13
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
As we have looked at the aftermath of Jesus breaking the seventh and final seal on the scroll He took from His Father God’s right hand in Heaven, specifically the events that transpired after three of the seven angels sounded their trumpets, we have seen chaos and catastrophe unleashed on earth. This chaos and catastrophe resulted from one third of the trees burned, a third of the collective oceans turned to blood, a third of all living sea creatures perishing, a third of the earth’s ships being destroyed at sea, and a third of the world’s water supply from rivers and springs turned bitter and toxic, utterly undrinkable.
As we move to the blowing of the fourth trumpet, we find a shift in the area impacted, this time objects in the heavens which would in turn have a drastic, negative effect on the earth below. Look at verses 12 and 13 from Revelation, chapter 8:
The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.
As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”
Imagine this for a moment. We marvel at what we see when we see the sun or moon eclipsed in some way but here, the change is permanent and terrifying. For a third of the sun will be blocked. Ditto for the moon and the stars at night. Further, the scriptures add that “a third of the day” would be without light “and also a third of the night”.
Losing a third of the sun would cause climate changes on earth, definitely reducing temperatures. Plant life that relies so much on the process of photosynthesis would also be negatively influenced.
Clearly, these events would have everyone on earth looking skyward and as they did, I’m sure they would have a clear view of the same soaring eagle that John saw, an eagle “flying in midair” and calling “out in a loud voice”:
“Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”
In other words, despite how terrible the outcomes triggered by the first four trumpets, the worst was yet to come as the final three trumpets were sounded, often referred to as “the three woes”.
We’ll start to look at those tomorrow.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
