The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.
Philippians 2:5-7a
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Over the past three messages, formed from the opening verses of Philippians, chapter 2, we have looked at specific Christ-like attitudes that Christians should adopt and present individually and collectively in the church.
Today, we start a new series as the Apostle Paul begins to share specific traits of Jesus with the believers in Philippi. Through this new series of messages, we’ll learn more about who Jesus was and still is today. Look at this opening passage:
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant. Philippians 2:5-7a
Jesus was one with His Father God. We know because He told us so.
“I and the Father are one.” John 10:30
Here, we find our Savior boldly proclaiming His equality with God the Father, the Maker and Master of all things, and everyone understood what He said because His Jewish opposition immediately moved to stone Him for blasphemy, the only form of execution they could carry out by the Law.
So we know that Jesus was and is an equal to His Father God who sent Him from heaven to earth and since Jesus was one with His Father, you could say that God came to earth in the form of man in the way of Jesus.
Indeed, Jesus was in His very nature God. He was like no other person who has ever walked the earth. There has been no one like Him and there will never be anyone who will be His equal. And yet, Jesus didn’t take advantage of His status. He didn’t reserve any special privilege for Himself. Rather, He showed us the greatest example of humility ever.
The scriptures attest as much proclaiming that Jesus, an equal to God, willingly chose to make Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant”. The King of all kings and Lord of all lords didn’t come to earth to have everyone serve Him. Rather, He came to be the perfect, humble Servant of all people.
That’s who Jesus was and who He still is today, the only equal to God who surrendered Himself in order to serve and save all who would believe in Him.
Let us give Him the fullest measure of our worship and praise, now and forever more.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
