The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
This is why it says:
“When He ascended on high, He took many captives and gave gifts to His people.”
(What does “He ascended” mean except that He also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very One who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)
Ephesians 4:8-10
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Jesus is the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. Period.
We know this because His Father God delegated all authority in heaven and on earth to His Son, the Son who victoriously rose from death and the grave to gain supremacy over Satan and all his minions. Jesus sits at the right hand of God and rules and reigns over all creation. He has been there since He ascended to the heavens on the fortieth day after His resurrection.
So Jesus went up to the heavens at the end of His thirty-three year ministry but this was only after He came down from Heaven to earth to walk and dwell amongst us. This is the point we find the Apostle Paul driving home to the Christians in Ephesus as he shares the up and down of Jesus.
Paul wants the Ephesian believers to understand that Jesus first came down as God in the flesh, what is known as the Great Incarnation. Mary, a humble and obedient young woman, was chosen by God to bear His only Son and it became the most divine and holy of conceptions, one initiated by an overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. And when Christ emerged from Mary’s womb, the course of mankind was changed forever for the long predicted Messiah, the Savior of the world, had come.
Today, Christians live here on earth under the command of Jesus, members of His Gospel army who are enlisted to help the unsaved find their salvation. They do so with the firm and sure knowledge that there will be one more final visit from Jesus, a visit where He will judge the earth and everyone on it. The sheep (those who accepted Jesus) will be segregated from the goats (those who rejected Jesus) and both groups will move onto very different ultimate outcomes (Matthew 25:31-46).
Jesus tells us that the sheep will go onto eternal life while the goats will “go away to eternal punishment” aka Hell.
Those in Christ will go up with Him to inhabit the New Jerusalem within the new heaven and earth.
Those who chose to refuse Christ will dwell in the depths of Hell forever in everlasting torment and damnation.
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see the up and down nature of His existence, past and present and future. The up or down nature of our destiny is completely dictated by our relationship or lack of relationship with Him.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
