The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine. Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!
And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.
2 Corinthians 11:10-12
This ends this
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Think about how our Lord relates to us, His people.
How do you see Him?
This past Sunday, I was teaching my small group at church and shared that I believe the best analogy that can describe how the Lord approaches His relationship with is a parent-child model with God as the ultimate, perfect Father.
A parent-child model is one we can all relate to, even if the relationship we had with our father or mother or both was less than memorable. In this model, you have someone responsible for the upbringing, care, protection, and overall wellbeing of another. The child being raised is dependent on their parents or parent for everything, especially their basic needs. The parent is ultimately responsible and accountable for ensuring the child is loved and brought up properly. This proper upbringing includes discipline because it’s inevitable that a child is going to do wrong and when that happens, correction is needed to ensure they understand the error of their ways and how to behave more appropriately. For one day, the children who are raised will one day be raising children of their own, Parenting begets future parenting.
So how should a father or mother parent their child?
They should use the Lord God Almighty, the Heavenly Father of all as their example.
For God loves unconditionally and provides for the every need of His children. He makes them feel valued and cared for. He also rebukes and corrects when wrongs are committed, not because He loves His children less but rather because He loves them all the more. In fact, God’s devotion to His children is everlasting and unstoppable, and He expects all worldly parents, those He has entrusted His kids to, to follow suit.
As we have seen in the study of 2 Corinthians 11, Paul cared deeply for the Corinthian Christians and was fully committed to helping them become more and more like Jesus. Not all of his words were laudatory in nature; rather, he sharply reprimanded the church in Corinth for sins that were being committed. He did so because he cared deeply for the believers there and didn’t want them to go astray.
In regard to his approach to ministry and spiritual mentoring, Paul saw himself as unstoppable because that’s how devoted he was to the cause of Christ. There was obviously opposition in the region of Achaia where Corinth was located who sought to try and discredit Paul in the eyes of the church. None of this deterred Paul who pushed back as we see in today’s passage from verses 10 through 12. He wanted his detractors to know that their efforts were fruitless for he was going to continue to press on and do what he was doing to bring the Gospel to the church. While the false teachers were trying to subtract from the kingdom work that Jesus called Paul to, the faithful Apostle carried on and was undeterred. Such was his deep love for the Corinthian believers, a love that God was fully aware of. Paul’s main goal was to undermine the efforts to stop the advancing of the Lord’s kingdom on earth.
In regard to the ministry work we do today, answering the call of Christ and following in Paul’s footsteps, how well do we handle challenges that come our way?
Do we allow Satan to use others to thwart our efforts?
Or do we turn to the Lord and allow Him to lead and guide us to victory so that His will might be done?
Friends, our Lord is an awesome, unstoppable God. He has no rival and no one can stand in the way of what He purposes to happen. Through Him, we are given the strength and power to do all things and overcome any efforts of the enemy. In the end translation, our Father’s will is going to be accomplished and we, His children, get to partner with him to make it happen.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
