The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.
2 Corinthians 1:13-14
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Everyone has different levels of intellect. Not everyone is on a level playing field when it comes to acquired knowledge whether talking about worldly or spiritual intelligence.
In regard to the latter, this is important to remember in ministry work because too often preachers and bible teachers teach at a theological level that is over the heads of their listeners. Frankly, this sort of defeats the whole purpose of the preaching and teaching which is to help people understand the word of God and how they can apply it to their lives to become more the people the Lord wants them to be.
When it comes to the main point God intended to convey through His word, that He chose to save all people by offering up His Son Jesus to die for their sins and bring pardon resulting in eternal life, we see how He intended simplicity in the Gospel. The explanation of how God made the way for everyone to be saved isn’t grounded in some complex doctrine. No, it’s a very simple message that anyone can grasp. This was by full design by a Lord who so loved the world that He didn’t wish for anyone to perish.
As we turn to our verses for today, we find the Apostle Paul following the Lord’s lead of keeping messaging simple. Look again at his words here:
For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus. 2 Corinthians 1:13-14
Note here that Paul was intentional in the way he wrote. In regard to his letter to the Corinthian believers, he didn’t write anything that was beyond their reading and understanding. Paul sought to make sure the Christians in Corinth comprehended what was written to them, at least in part but with the hope the understanding might be full.
Why?
Because Paul wanted the Corinthian Christians to be proud of the work that he and his fellow missionaries were carrying out, and he hoped the level of pride would equal the level of pride he had for the Corinthian congregation. In the end, there was anticipation that equal praise, one for the other, would take place on the day when Jesus returned, the day of the Lord.
The simplicity of Paul’s message was clear and we see the importance of keeping it simple ourselves when it comes to our own ministry work. It’s my prayer every day that I write in ways that are easily understood by my readers and I hope I hit the mark. With the Lord as my guide, I have complete confidence I do.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
