The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

1 Corinthians 13:6

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Evil is not an excellent way. Even the world with all its faults (and they are many) knows that.

And yet, evil is alive and well in our world. One needs only keep up with the news on television or via the internet, or even monitor a community app like NextDoor to see this is true. Satan is active and influencing people to sin against others, often in horrific fashion.

Every day, I read or hear about senseless shootings where people use weapons to target other in what constitutes a complete disregard for the sanctity of human life. In one instance, the person was caught and said they had no remorse over what they had done. No guilt. No regret.

This is the face of extreme evil and it is a place void of love.

Now, there are certainly lesser forms of evil like stealing from another, physically or mentally abusing a person, trafficking people into sexual or other forms of slavery, slandering someone from a place of falsehood, or committing adultery. These and other types of malevolence are just as forbidden by God and like murder, are absent of love.

So why do people commit these acts? How could a person get to such a place of lovelessness?

The answer is found in verse 6 of 1 Corinthians 13.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

Here we learn the key to rejecting evil in our lives. We do so by discovering love, the kind of love that rejoices with the truth.

To find this kind of love, we need to find truth and there’s no other place to discover it than through Jesus, the One who told us that He is the Truth (John 14:6).

You see, when we surrender our lives to Jesus, the perfect source of all truth, then we find genuine love, a love that never seeks to take life but rather save it, even if it means sacrificing oneself.

Friends, this is the kind of truth that love rejoices in and when we turn to Jesus ourselves and gain truth ourselves, then we will find love rejoicing within the right and righteous lives we live, lives defined by Christ Jesus, a life that people can see is Christian in nature.

Love doesn’t delight in evil because our Lord doesn’t and we won’t either when we allow our lives to be led by Him. My prayer for you this day is that you will do just that.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
