The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

James 1:5-7

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

I don’t think I have met anyone who didn’t wish to be wise. Maybe because the alternative would be foolishness and no one wants to be a fool.

So if everyone would like to be wise, the questions become:

How do we acquire it? What do we need to do to become wise?

Well, as we see in every other aspect of living this thing called life, God’s word holds the answers to our questions. Look again at these verses from the first chapter of James:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” James 1:5-7

What’s the way to wisdom?

The scriptures tell us that it’s found through asking God. That’s it.

All one needs to do is to ask God for wisdom and it will be given generously.

It’s really too easy, right?

Maybe too easy because as we read on in our passage, we find that there is actually a possibility that someone could mess up the wisdom opportunity offered by God. In other words, a person could find themselves go astray off of the way of wisdom, taken off course by their lack of faith.

Indeed, trust is a prerequisite to receive the generous wisdom God has to offer. If we fail to believe in the perfect Lord who always shares absolute truth, allowing our lack of faith to place our feet upon the shifting sands of doubt, they we will be unsure, uncertain, and unstable. We’ll also be in a place where we are ill prepared to receive any wisdom the Lord would like to impose on us. This is the only reason why God might choose to withhold His wisdom from someone.

So don’t do that. Don’t come to God unsure that He can provide the wisdom you seek. Rather, approach Him with a bold and unwavering confidence that He can and will lead you on the way to wisdom.

The key is an uncompromising trust, unmitigated by doubt.

If you have this, wisdom will be yours and in inexhaustible quantity,

It’s as simple as that.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
