The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“For I did not speak on My own, but the Father who sent Me commanded Me
to say all that I have spoken. I know that His command leads to eternal life.
So whatever I say is just what the Father has told Me to say.”
John 12:49-50
This ends
today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Have you ever found yourself looking for
just the right words to say?
I think I can say with complete confidence
that everyone has been in that place at one time or another. I know I do it
every day when I sit down with my laptop and write these messages. My prayer
each time is that the devotions are meaningful to the people who read them.
How can I make sure that prayer is answered?
It’s pretty simple. I just allow the Lord
to give me the words to say.
Or in other words, I allow myself to be a
mouthpiece for God.
Of course, this isn’t a new concept. For we
find it happening in the scriptures over and over and over again. God chose
people, both men and women, to serve Him in special capacities and those people
allowed their words to be His words. The end result was that His purposes were
fulfilled and that should be the goal we are always shooting for, no matter
what we do. We should be laser-focused on making sure we are accomplishing what
God wants more than anything else.
This is exactly what we see when we look at
the life of our Savior Jesus and it started at a very young age. You may recall
this account of what happened when Jesus became separated from His parents:
His
parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He
was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the
feast.
When
they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in
Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; but supposing Him to have been in the company,
they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and
acquaintances.
So
when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. Now so it
was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the
midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And
all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when
they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You
done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”
And
He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My
Father’s business?” Luke 2:41-49
Think about what you were doing at twelve
years old. I’m pretty sure you weren’t in a place where you could amaze religious
leaders with your theological knowledge. But Jesus was no ordinary twelve year
old boy. He was God’s Son and He knew His place was in God’s house or carrying
out His Father’s business, wherever He was.
Fast forward to our scripture passage for
today as Jesus is living His last days before His execution. Here we find that
nothing has changed. Jesus is still about His Father’s business as He talks to
a group of Jews gathered to listen to Him. He has shared words about who He was,
why He had come, and as we see today, where He received the words He spoke.
Look again at His words here:
“For I did
not speak on My own, but the Father who sent Me commanded Me to say all that I
have spoken. I know that His command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say
is just what the Father has told Me to say.”
Jesus always said the perfect things
because He was allowing a perfect Father to give Him the words to speak. And it
wasn’t that Jesus just arbitrarily decided on His own accord to allow God to
speak though Him. No, His Father God had commanded Him to be His mouthpiece. It
wasn’t an option.
Friends, this is a game changer for anyone
who has spent their life, either in full or in part, speaking words they are
generating themselves, words that often get us in trouble, words that can harm
and damage without reparation in some cases.
Looking at the words of Jesus and knowing
the Lord God Almighty wants to speak through us, why wouldn’t we totally commit
ourselves to allowing His words to be our own?
My prayer is that today and every day, we
all would commit to following the lead of Jesus, something we’re supposed to do
as Christians, and become mouthpieces through which God can speak.
It’s the only way we’ll know that our words
are perfectly appropriate and applicable to whatever situation we find
ourselves in.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
