The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
When Jesus came into Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on Him.

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
Matthew 8:14-17

As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.

Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So He went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but He would not let the demons speak because they knew who He was.

Mark 1:29-34

Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So He bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them. Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”

But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Messiah.

Luke 4:38-41

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Jesus didn’t waste any time getting to work after finishing His hallmark teaching event, The Sermon on the Mount.

We have seen Him rid a man of leprosy and heal the servant of a Roman centurion with mere words commanding wellness. His actions left His followers more and more amazed but He was far from finished. Far from it.

For as we continue to look at the Gospels and parallel passages from Matthew, Mark, and Luke, we find Jesus continuing to show that there was no affliction too great for His healing and restoring power.

First, we find Jesus coming to the aid of one of His dearest followers, Simon Peter. Mark’s account tells us that Jesus had left the synagogue and was accompanied by James and John, who along with Peter and his brother Andrew had made up the first four disciples Jesus called to His service. This threesome went to Peter and Andrew’s home where they found his mother-in-law lying in bed and very sick with a fever. Jesus was asked to help her and He obliged, touching her hand and rebuking the illness. The scriptures tell us that the fever left her and she was as if she had not even been sick. We know this because the mother-in-law “got up at once” and “began to wait on them”.

How miraculous was that?!

It would have been enough in its own right but Jesus was far from finished for we read that “evening after sunset”, the people began bringing to Jesus all the people who were “sick and demon-possessed”. With the “whole town gathered at the door”, Jesus proceeded to again show that there was no affliction too great for Him. We read where He laid hands on each person and healed them one by one. Where demons were the cause of affliction, Jesus drove out the evil spirits, rebuking them while forbidding them to speak because they knew who He was.

It had to be amazing for all who witnessed it and for those who were well versed in the Law and the Prophets, they would have recognized Jesus’ actions as a prophecy fulfillment of Isaiah who had predicted this about the Messiah:

“He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” Isaiah 53:4

Friends, where are you or those you love afflicted in life today? Are you or someone you know stricken by illness or injury? Have demons found their way into your life or the life of someone dear to you, bringing spiritual sickness?

If so, know the same Jesus who healed the ill and possessed in New Testament times is the same Jesus who lives to heal us today. He is our Great Physician and no physician or mental health professional has the ability or power to do what He can.

Indeed, Jesus is our Savior, saving us from death but also saving us from our infirmities until that day when we leave this life to abide with Him forever. Until then, there is no affliction too great for Him. Believe and trust in that today, and then praise Jesus for that truth.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
