The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy
word.
“Woe to you who laugh now, for you will
mourn and weep.”
Luke 6:25b
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be
to God.
Some people think they can make it in life on their own
with no need of the Lord who made them, the Lord who wants to lead and guide
them, the Lord who can satisfy and fulfill their every desire, the Lord who
wants to show them a life beyond imagination, a Lord who shows that the most
valuable things are not of the earth but rather found in the treasures of
heaven.
Indeed, there are countless people choosing to separate
themselves from the Lord, seemingly happy to revel in the offerings of the world,
offerings that deceive them into thinking life is nothing but pleasurable,
nothing but an experience that will always be filled with laughter and
happiness.
Unfortunately, that is not reality, is it?
For life has its joys, there is no disputing that, but it
also has its share of sorrows and when those sorrows come, where does a person
find real comfort and solace, compassion and empathy?
It’s definitely not in the world, I can tell you that.
For in my work helping people in crisis, it amazes me how many people are lost
and crying out for someone or something to help them in their time of need.
There’s a common theme of desperation in the people I encounter, a yearning for
some sense of relief from the pressures, hardships, and cloud of sadness they
are under. In other words, they are living in woe.
If they only would turn to the Lord.
You may remember Jesus saying this about anyone who was
in the midst of mourning or grief over their life circumstances:
“Blessed
are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
Note here that Jesus is associating happiness with those
who are in mourning, a statement that seems counterintuitive by the world’s
standards but when you think about it in regard to the Lord, one can see that
the perspective changes because one’s happiness is attached to their
relationship with Him, whether times are good or bad.
One can be living in contentment when all is going well
because of the Lord and one can live in contentment when they are grieving and
suffering in life, again, because of the Lord, the Lord who brings comfort and
consolation whenever someone who trusts in Him seeks it.
Therefore, in good times and bad, the joy of the Lord is one’s
strength (Nehemiah 8:10) when they place their faith and hope in Him. For the
non-believer, the alternative is a life filled with woe as soon as difficulty
comes.
The choice is really up to us. I pray you, like me, will
choose the Lord.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
