The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Am I only a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the Lord. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 23:23-24

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

When you think about God and His involvement in your life, how do you think of Him?

There could be any number of things someone might say to respond to that question but perhaps they could be summed up in three primary qualities found in God, sometimes referred to as the three “omnis”.

First, God is omnipotent.

It’s a big word but in essence, it simply means that God is all powerful, perfectly so. In fact, God’s power has no measure and He has no rival when it comes to His strength. It’s why He is referred to as the Lord Almighty because He is completely dominant and unparalleled when it comes to the force He brings to bear.

Just consider the matter of creation.

In just six days, God made all that we know, the heavens and the earth, and everything that within and upon each. Think about the immense power that it took to make that happen and then ask yourself if there is anything that could be compared to it. When pondering this, it takes little time to fully appreciate the omnipotence that God possesses and it leaves little wonder why Jesus stated that when it comes to His Father and ours, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

The second “omni” attributed to God is omniscience.

Like omnipotent, this world may not be familiar to all believers but its meaning is and that’s what matters most. This is because saying God is omniscient is the same as saying that He knows all things. He is the Great Possessor of all knowledge and wisdom, and just as we saw with the matter of His power, no thing or no one exceeds God’s intellect. In fact, it’s not even close as validated by these words from 1 Corinthians:

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.” 1 Corinthians 1:25

In other words, no human being even remotely has the brain power to compete with God intellectually. It would be pure folly to even try. Rather, we need to follow the guidance of the scriptures from Proverbs which commands us to:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

So we serve a God who is omnipotent (all powerful) and omniscient (all knowing). To find the third “omni”, we can look at today’s two verses as we conclude our study of Jeremiah 23. Look again at these words of God and see if you can pick out His third main quality:

“Am I only a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the Lord. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord.  Jeremiah 23:23-24

Note that God’s own words tell us that He is everywhere and with that, there is nowhere we can go where we are not in His midst.

In other words, God is omnipresent.

He tells us as much saying that He is not only a near God but a far away one as well. He fills the heaven and the earth to the point that there is no secret place any man or woman where they are hidden from His sight. He is an ever present God who witnesses everything we do, say, and think. Therefore, we are continuously accountable to God for all we do and nothing gets overlooked. We need to keep this in the forefront of our minds when sin and temptation come knocking at our life’s door.

Omnipotent. Omniscient. Omnipresent.

All are amazing, unmatched qualities of the God who is all powerful, all knowing, and always present, the Lord who rules and reigns over us His people.

Give Him all your praise, honor, and glory today and every day.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
