The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“I will make you a wall to this
people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not
overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,” declares the Lord. “I
will save you from the hands of the wicked and deliver you from the grasp of
the cruel.”
Jeremiah 15:20-21
This ends today’s reading from God's holy
word. Thanks be to God.
Life can bring a lot of adversity our way. It’s an
inevitable fact.
Indeed, it’s rare that anyone goes through their lives
without facing some level of hardship, some more than others. And those times
of difficulty, when they come, can challenge us to where we wonder if we have
the strength to make it through.
Such was the case of the prophet Jeremiah, called on by God
to deliver a message of judgment to an obstinate and insolent people of Israel
who had blatantly disrespected God by worshipping false gods and idols. Their
actions clearly showed they had no interest in following God’s commands so how
much more were they going to be interested in listening to someone who came and
proclaimed to be speaking in God’s name?
Obviously they weren’t. In fact, the job of a prophet was downright
dangerous for there was little to nothing that would get in the way of any
resident of Judah or Jerusalem bringing harm on God’s messenger to shut him up
for good. Nothing of the world anyways.
That’s why the prophet was blessed to God’s fortification
and protection because he could then go forward boldly in the name of the Lord
without fear of what might happen to him as he delivered a message that he knew
would not be popular with the audience receiving it. We know that the Lord was
with His messenger because He promised it was so in the final verses of
Jeremiah 15. Look again at those words here:
“I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they
will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue
and save you,” declares the Lord. “I will save you from the hands of the wicked
and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.”
Jeremiah 15:20-21
God’s covering would be on Jeremiah, so much so that the
prophet would be walled off from anyone of the Israelites who might wish to do
him harm, fortified and protected from danger. Those who were in the crosshairs
of God’s judgment would seek to fight His prophet but they would not have
victory because God would come to His messenger’s rescue and save him from his
assailants.
God had shown over and over again that He was a great
Deliverer and He continued that work in the life of Jeremiah.
Friends, we need to gain confidence and assurance from
these two verses for as we go forth to do the work of God and follow His word,
will, and way, we’re not doing it alone but rather always have Him with us.
He is our great Fortifier and Rescuer, our great Deliverer
and Defender, our great Protector and Redeemer.
We can’t make it through life without Him but with Him, we
can make it through anything.
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
