In Christ, Mark
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Pride brings a person low but the
lowly in spirit gain honor.
Proverbs
29:23
This ends this reading from God's holy word.
Thanks be to God.
Think
about the matter of finding success in life. What advice have you received?
Shoot for
the stars.
Climb the
ladder to the top.
Aspire to
greatness.
Strive to
move up in the world.
Note that
the way to greatness is vertical in nature. If you want to find your way to the
highest levels of achievement, then you need to ascend and rise above. Then and
only then can you reach a place of distinction and honor.
This is
the way the world teaches us but as we have seen in so many other cases, the
word of the Lord can contradict and instruct in totally opposite directions.
Today’s scripture offering from Proverbs, Chapter 29 is one of those offerings:
Pride brings a person low but the lowly in spirit gain honor. Proverbs
29:23
One thing
we find about the quest for success is often we face the issue of pride as we
gain it. We achieve and achieve and achieve to the point where we begin to feel
we’re better than others. We gain so much praise from others as to how well we’re
doing that we tend to want to keep all the glory and honor to ourselves. After
all, it was OUR work that got us to success, right?
I think
the Lord would differ with that attitude.
For all
that we are and all that we are blessed with come from Him and Him alone. If we
succeed, it’s because He blessed us with the talents, ability, and opportunity
to do so. It’s as simple as that therefore it’s the Lord who deserves all our
honor, glory, and praise when we achieve great things.
This is a
different attitude, an attitude that is Lord-centric, not self-centered. It’s
an attitude of humility where we place ourselves second to allow the Lord to be
first. And as our proverb tells us today, those who humble themselves and
willingly become low in spirit will gain honor.
God’s
word is clear here. Those who seek to live low in humility will be the ones who
find true honor and their way to the top. Conversely, those who pridefully
focus on themselves will be brought low.
In other
words, we will be brought low and be humbled. We can either go there willingly
or the Lord will take us there Himself.
So which
way will you go low?
Frankly,
I think you would agree. It’s much easier to go there on your own.
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
