The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Eat honey, my son,
for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste. Know also that
wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and
your hope will not be cut off.
Proverbs 24:13-14
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to
God.
My wife and I went into a
local Long John Silver’s restaurant today to grab some food for dinner. The man
who waited on us was very pleasant and we enjoyed some small talk with him
while we settled the cost of our order. Then we sat and waited for our food.
While we waited, we noticed
the man had a sweatshirt on with one of the most beloved cartoon characters
around, Winnie the Pooh. This sparked a conversation as my wife and I talked
about our memories of Winnie the Pooh from our childhood days.
Most everyone is familiar
with the basic storyline. Winnie the Pooh is a chubby little bear who has a
problem. He has an insatiable appetite for honey and every story we seem to
read about Pooh will have him after his favorite treat. Pooh’s love for honey
was so significant that he would go to great lengths to get it, whether trying
to bum some off his neighbor, Rabbit, or risking life and limb by trying to
steal it out from the stingers of the very bees who were producing it in the
hives.
Yes, Pooh loved his honey
and it’s obvious real life people did too as we look at our scripture for
today, two verses which represent the 26th of the thirty Sayings of the Wise
written by Solomon. Here are the verses:
Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from
the comb is sweet to your taste. Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If
you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
Proverbs 24:13-14
Here we find honey not only
being touted as a desirable food but used as an analogy to wisdom, wisdom that
is sweet to the one who receives it, wisdom that is to be pursued with as much
vigor and desperation as Winnie the Pooh displayed going after the honey he
craved so very much.
But let me be clear here.
The comparison between honey and wisdom stops with the matter of desiring
something that tastes good and going to great lengths to get it. For when it
comes to wisdom, we gain so much more than anything this world can offer us,
including the sweetest honey made by the finest bees.
I say this because the word
of God for today tells us that finding wisdom leads us to a future hope that
will never be cut off, a hope that will never end, a hope that is eternal in
nature. Wisdom, as we have covered over and over in our study of the Proverbs,
cannot be found in anyone or anyplace here on earth. Rather, wisdom can only be
found when we turn our hearts and minds over to the Lord God Almighty, the
Maker of Heaven and Earth and, of course, wisdom.
When we turn to the Lord
and seek His wisdom, then we are led to a life of righteousness and a life of
righteousness can only be lived by emulating the life of Jesus, the One who
told us He was the Way and the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). After all, that’s
what being Christian is all about, striving to be Christ-like in every way. And
when we strive to be Christ-like, then we have already accepted Jesus into our
lives and received Him in our hearts and minds, willing to sacrifice our will
in exchange for His while receiving His promise of salvation for all those who
place their trust in Him. It’s this action, placing our trust in Jesus, the
Savior of the world, that leads us to a future hope that buoys us up in hope
also in the present. We have nothing to fear, nothing to worry about, nothing
to be anxious about in this life because no matter what comes, we will be
living with God the Father and Jesus His Son when this temporary, worldly life
is over.
Friends, this is good news
for us today. Seeking wisdom places us on the way toward future hope, a future
hope we will always find through Jesus, the One who lived in perfect wisdom
during His time walking this earth.
The “do not” caution for
today?
“Do not” stop from seeking
wisdom so that you will never lose sight of the future hope you have in Christ
Jesus, a future hope that is sweeter than honey or anything else in this world.
Amen.
Mark
