The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand He hid Me; He made Me into a polished arrow and concealed Me in His quiver.

He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display My splendor.”

Isaiah 49:2-3

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As chapter 49 of Isaiah opens, we hear the words of the coming Messiah, our Savior Jesus, as He proclaims His impending arrival into creation as God’s special servant who was called to save all mankind before He was even conceived in Mary’s womb. In yesterday’s devotion, Called From Birth, we learned that God has a special purpose for all of us and has had so before we were formed. Once we reach an age where we can serve Him, we are to seek out His plans for us and then carry out those plans in obedience to His will.

Of course, when we think of Jesus, we can find a perfect example of one who carried out this call flawlessly. From even His early years, Jesus was about His Father’s business, even telling His parents as much after they had lost track of Him in His early years, finding Him in the temple (Luke 2:49 NKJV). As He grew older, He healed and taught and provided for the needs of anyone He encountered, especially anyone who was considered by the culture of the time as “the least of these”, those exiled from normal life and pushed out to the fringes of society. And when the religiously arrogant leaders of the day shunned the sinner, as if they were any less so, Jesus was the One who spent time with them for they were the ones in dire need of saving. Perhaps we would be well served to remember this as we deal with people in the present day.

So God gifted His Son with an amazing purpose and called Him before He was formed in the womb. He also gave Jesus, His perfect servant, other gifts as well, gifts we find nestled in verses 2 through 7 as we continue looking at Isaiah, chapter 49. Today, we’ll look at the first set of gifts found in verses 2 and 3:

He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand He hid Me; He made Me into a polished arrow and concealed Me in His quiver.

He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display My splendor.”

Did you pick out the wonderful things that God gave to His blessed Son?

They included:

1. Speech as a weapon.

He made my mouth like a sharpened sword; He made Me into a polished arrow and concealed Me in His quiver.

Has your heart ever been pierced by the words of Christ?

I know mine has. And as we look at the words Jesus spoke, how many times did He use the word of God from the Old Testament scriptures? Over and over again. Why? I think the writer of Hebrews summed it up nicely:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Need an example of how Jesus used His speech as a weapon. Look at Matthew, Chapter 4 as Jesus wards off the tempting attacks of Satan. He did it using the word of God, showing us how to do it too when we carry the sword of the Lord which is the word of God, a part of the full armor we are to don daily (Ephesians 6:17).

2. His hand of protection.

In the shadow of his hand He hid Me

Jesus certainly had no shortage of enemies in His lifetime. Plenty of people hated Him, some of which enough to want Him dead but that was not going to happen before God’s appointed place and time. Until then, God protected His Son, placing His covering over Him as Jesus carried out His plan.

Maybe one of the things we take for granted most as we serve God daily is that He protects us as well. The world we live in is certainly full of many dangers and perhaps we’ll never know just how often we were kept from harm by God until that day when we go to be with Him forever and all things are made known to us. Until then, I know I take great comfort in knowing He is watching over me as I follow Him and live this thing called life.

3. His splendor.

He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display My splendor.”

What happens when God’s splendor is displayed through someone?

Well, brilliance, glory, grandeur, majesty, and magnificence to name a few and I think we can all agree that in looking at the life of Jesus across the ages, these words can all be used to describe Him. When you looked at the Son, you were looking at the Father. We can only hope that the same can be said for us as we serve God ourselves, that somehow people will get a glimpse of His splendor through our work in and through Him.

A word that pierces and penetrates. Protection. Splendor.

These are the first three gifts we find given to Jesus, the perfect Servant, by God who made Him and ordained Him to carry out His salvation plan for all creation. As we’ll see tomorrow, there’s far more than this when it comes to the way that Jesus was blessed by His Father. Can’t wait to share then.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Listen to Me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called Me; from My mother’s womb He has spoken My name.

Isaiah 49:1

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Back in the day when the gender of a child was not known before the time of birth, a popular phrase exclaimed as the baby emerged from its mother’s womb was “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” It would mark the start of a celebration of life for the parents and their child as they nurtured he or she into adulthood where they might be parents themselves, repeating the cycle of joyful birth followed by years of teaching and developing their children.

Now, I’m not sure what they might have proclaimed back in biblical days when a child was born into the world but I’m pretty sure they didn’t say “It’s a servant!” any more than people would say today. And yet, as we will see in the opening single verse from Isaiah 49, the coming Messiah and Savior of the world, Jesus, boldly states even before He was born that this was His purpose from the time of birth. Look at His words here:

Listen to Me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called Me; from My mother’s womb He has spoken My name.  Isaiah 49:1

First, we need to look at the audience Jesus is speaking to. Much of the world was undiscovered and thus unknown by the people of His times but He was well aware of all creation as He was one with God, His Father who created it all. There were many lands that were distant, inhabited by people who would need salvation as much as the people of Israel who He would grow up and live among. Jesus came for all to save all and so His audience was global in nature. Today, He still serves and saves regardless of nationality.

The second takeaway from this, and the key one for this devotion, is that the Lord Jesus was called before He was born. We need only go back to this account from the Gospel of Luke:

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. Luke 1:26-38

Jesus had not yet been conceived in Mary’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit and yet His purposes were already set by His Father. He would be the Son of God and would reign over His Father’s kingdom forever. Indeed, He is not only our Savior but our Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 17:14), granted that authority over heaven and earth by God (Matthew 28:18). In other words, His service to God’s people was pre-established and pre-ordained.

Friends, we never really look at ourselves as called to servitude from birth but the fact of the matter is that we are just that. Look at these words to the prophet Jeremiah:

The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:4-5

Set apart before he was formed in the womb for a particular purpose. That is the truth about Jeremiah and it’s the truth about each and every person the God creates. We aren’t some haphazard genetic formation of flesh, blood, and bone. No, each of us is perfectly and wonderfully made for amazing purposes, crafted by a remarkable and magnificent Creator. For the Lord tells us:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Jeremiah 29:11

Friends, the scriptures are truth and today they are telling us that we have been called since birth to carry out the Lord’s will and way in service to Him and others. He knew the plans He had for us before we were made. Our lives were laid out on His divine blueprint, destined for prosperity and hope for the future.

Given this, all we need to do is to turn to Him, following His direction and guidance in submissive obedience and trust each and every day. Let’s not make life hard but rather live it out as the Lord designed it for us before we were conceived.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”

Isaiah 48:22

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever been in a place where you lost peace in life?

I know I have and it’s not a fun place to be.

You see, when we talk about peace-less living then we need to talk about a life that embodies the opposite characteristics of a peaceful life. It is a life that is defined by conflict, contentiousness, discord, strife, trouble, turmoil, fighting, and unrest. Peace-less living leaves us caught up in stress, anxiety, fear, and worry. It seems our ever waking thought is caught up in our circumstances and our peace deprivation results in more than a few sleepless nights, offering us more waking moments to ponder our situation.

Maybe you can relate.

Well, today the word of God touches on this matter of peacelessness as we look at the final verse of Isaiah 48. Want to know about one source of a life that is missing peace? Look at these words:

This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”
Isaiah 48:22

Now, you are going to have to follow me closely through the progression of thoughts here.

The statement from the Lord seems to be a no brainer, right? In fact, it seems too simple to devote an entire devotion to but any of my readers know how I roll and there are often hidden gems of wisdom the Lord is seeking to bring us, even in one mere verse.

There is no peace for the wicked.

The Lord said it and I don’t think any of us would disagree. A person who chooses to live wickedly is a person who has chosen to sin. They have opted for transgression over righteousness, conscientiously deciding to violate the Lord’s commands, principles, and expectations. A lifestyle like that is not going to be favored by God and as we know, He will bring His judgment on anyone who disregards or disrespects Him.

This is the unsettling aspect of wickedness that should not leave anyone who exercises it in peace.

But let’s take this down a different path for a minute. For think about the matter of the wicked for a moment.

Who are the wicked anyways?

Well, I would submit to you that anyone who sins can be counted in that number and so that means we all are being wicked, have been wicked, or will at some time in the future be wicked. It’s in our DNA. We just don’t like to talk about it.

Indeed, I can feel the hair standing up on the necks of some who are reading this right now because we do not like to face what we are sometimes and the fact of the matter is that we are all sinners who have no hope without the saving grace that comes from Christ Jesus our Lord, the Savior of the world who was sent by God, His Father and ours, to die on the cross and pay the sin penalty for all mankind. Jesus did this for the wicked, for wretches like you and for me. We did not deserve it but He did it because He loved us. It truly is amazing grace.

Friends, we cannot find ourselves to the peace that eternal life in Jesus brings us until we realize our wicked state and why we need a Savior in the first place. Jesus, and only Jesus, shows us the way to walk off the broad path paved in evil ways with a destination of destruction onto a narrow way of righteousness that leads to true life, the kind of life that God the Father favors, now and forever more (Matthew 7:13-14). This path is paved with peace and hope as we bask in the light of the Lord’s love, in the light and love of the One who is the Prince of peace.

When we who are inherently wicked, choose to focus fully on the Lord’s ways without compromise, then we will find our peaceless existence give way to a peaceful one that no one can take away from us for we will be living in the peace of the Lord which transcends all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).

It’s this peace that I pray for you.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, “The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob.” They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts; He made water flow for them from the rock; He split the rock and water gushed out.

Isaiah 48:20-21

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Freed from bondage.

It’s one of the main themes of the Old Testament and a fact of life from the history of pre-Jesus Israel as God showed over and over that He was indeed their refuge and very present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). In our scripture verses for today from Isaiah 48, the Lord reminds us how He redeemed and delivered His people from times of oppressions and hardship. Let’s look again at His words here:

This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, “The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob.” They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts; He made water flow for them from the rock; He split the rock and water gushed out.
Isaiah 48:20-21

Judgment was coming on the people of Israel. They had violated God one too many times and so He was going to take them away from everything He had blessed them with. Their homeland would be laid to waste by the Babylonians and they would be hauled away into exile in a foreign land, their freedom gone and exchanged for oppression.

Yet, in the midst of these consequences, we see that the same Lord of judgment is a Lord of mercy and liberation. The Israelite exile was not going to last forever and God’s people would be allowed to flee from their captivity and return home to rebuild their homes, their cities, and most importantly, their faith (I recommend reading the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah for the account).

Of course, this was nothing new for God and He wanted His people to know it. For when their ancestors were being held by Pharaoh who refused God’s petition for their release, God showed that He was a great Redeemer of His holy ones of Israel and set miraculous events in motion that led to the people of Israel finding freedom. And with no place to live, the Lord took care of that too, leading His people on an exodus to a land He reserved for them, the promised land of Canaan that would become the land of Israel. Again, the Lord liberated and set His people free in their time of need, providing for them in astonishing ways during their journey.

Fast forward now to the New Testament days. God saw that there was a need for redemption and deliverance that exceeded any of the ones that had preceded for His people were held captive and oppressed by sin and death awaited them unless they were given a way to be saved.

And so out of love, He sent His one and only Son Jesus who bore the sins of mankind as He was crucified on Calvary’s cross. Instead of the death penalty falling on every man and woman on earth, God chose for His Son to die in their place, a living sacrifice to usher in atonement from transgression. Through Christ, everyone was given the opportunity to be liberated and set free from the captivity, bondage, and oppression of sinfulness. All they had to do (and all we still have to do today and forever more) is to profess our belief and trust in Jesus as Savior, committing our all to Him just as He gave His all for us.

Friends, when this happens, when we surrender our will and way for the Savior Jesus who tells is He is the way and the only path to God the Father (John 14:6) then we are set free from the death verdict of sin and justified (made just-as-if-I-had-never-sinned) before our Master and Maker. In other words, we become victorious people, victorious over death and the grave just as Jesus was and set loose to live and love and learn in righteousness under His divine tutelage.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
